Poor Sleep Quality Raises Dementia, Stroke, Cancer Risk

Sleep isn’t just a numbers game; the hours you log matter less than how restorative they are, and small habits can wreck otherwise adequate rest. Experts point to alcohol, late caffeine, stress, phone use and biological differences as common culprits that fragment sleep. Practical fixes include tiny increases in nightly sleep, consistent routines, and smarter evening eating to help the body actually benefit from time in bed.

Dr. Wendy Troxel makes the “really important distinction” between quantity and quality of sleep, and that shift in thinking changes how we tackle tiredness. “Many people will say, ‘Man, I’m sleeping enough, I got seven to eight hours of sleep, but I still wake up feeling groggy and not refreshed,’” she told Fox News Digital during an in-studio interview. “About one in three adults has non-restorative sleep quality.”

“There are many factors that can contribute to poor sleep quality, regardless of how many hours you slept,” Troxel noted, and many of those are everyday choices or stressors. Alcohol is a major offender because it fragments the deep stages of sleep, and caffeine late in the day can subtly push your brain into a wired state at night. Screen time and worry both tug at sleep continuity, turning an eight-hour block into a series of short naps instead of cohesive rest.

Biology matters too: women’s sleep often gets harder to preserve, and the data backs that up. “What we absolutely know is that women’s sleep quality often suffers more than men’s,” she said. “They may be getting more non-restorative sleep quality, therefore needing slightly more sleep.”

Insomnia trends and life transitions amplify that gap, with women twice as likely to experience chronic sleeplessness and a marked spike during menopause. People sometimes pride themselves on operating with very little sleep, but lab work shows real costs to thinking and reaction time. “It’s simply that their body is not used to it,” she said.

Researchers warn that subjective confidence in short-sleep performance is misleading because the brain adapts to deficits and masks decline. “That means someone who thinks they’re fine with only four hours of sleep per night likely isn’t aware of the impact sleep deprivation has on their cognition and performance.” Small, deliberate changes are easier to sustain than big overhauls when you’re trying to rewire tired habits.

Practical steps are low drama: nudge sleep time up by about 15 minutes and see how your daytime energy shifts, and prioritize a steady sleep-wake schedule to anchor your circadian rhythm. “You will likely see benefits when you increase your sleep in small increments,” she said, and pairing that with a healthier evening routine amplifies the effect.

Even the timing and content of late-night meals matter, because digestion can fight sleep if you’re too full or awake if you’re ravenous. “You don’t want to be starving at bedtime, but you also don’t want to be trying to fall asleep on a full stomach while your body’s still actively digesting,” she said. Alongside diet and habit fixes, Troxel warns against cultural pressure: people should not be “sleep-shamed” for following their internal clocks, since “These cultural trends have these subtle, or not-so-subtle, ways of undermining people’s sleep-wake biology, which is largely out of our control,” she said.
