One-Wheeled AI Security Robot Could Patrol Properties, Cut Costs

1Rollo is a slim, one-wheeled security robot built to patrol large properties with AI, cameras, and remote human oversight. The design promises fast response, lower operating costs, and a very different kind of watchman for campuses, warehouses, and industrial sites.

Instead of sitting still like a camera on a pole, the robot rolls along mapped routes and keeps scanning its surroundings in real time. Its job is to spot unusual activity, flag it quickly, and let a person decide whether a guard should be dispatched.

The machine comes from Estonian startup Rollo Robotics, which is aiming squarely at property owners who want more coverage without adding more manpower. The company says the narrow build helps the robot move through tight spaces while still covering a wide outdoor area.

At the center of 1Rollo is a 360-degree vision system paired with RTK GNSS positioning, a more precise version of satellite navigation. That setup helps keep patrols on track while the robot watches for obstacles and changes course when needed.

The AI side is there to catch the stuff that deserves attention. If something looks off, the robot can send an alert through Wi-Fi or a cellular connection, giving a remote operator a chance to review the scene before anyone rushes in.

Balance is the trickiest part of the whole design, and the company leans on a vertically mounted spinning flywheel to keep the robot upright. By shifting that internal weight side to side, 1Rollo can tilt, turn, and stay steady on a single wheel.

That monowheel layout gives it a small footprint, which could make it useful where a larger patrol vehicle would be awkward. The tradeoff is that the company has not yet shared hard data on how well it handles rough terrain, steep grades, or stairs, so the real-world limits are still part of the story.

Rollo Robotics lists the robot at about 43 inches tall and roughly 100 pounds, with a 24-inch wheel and a top speed of 19 mph. For a security machine, that is brisk, and the company also says battery life can stretch to eight hours per charge with autonomous wireless charging support.

The platform is also meant to be flexible. Along with its standard 360-degree vision system, it can support thermal cameras, night vision, RFID tools, and pan-tilt-zoom cameras, giving different customers room to tailor patrols to their own properties.

That kind of add-on approach matters because no two sites look the same. A warehouse, office campus, or industrial yard may need different sensors, and the robot is designed to take on those jobs without forcing a one-size-fits-all setup.

Security teams would also be able to manage multiple units from a cloud-based platform. From one screen, an operator could set routes, check performance, and jump into a live feed after an alert comes in.

The robot includes a microphone and speaker too, which opens the door to a quick conversation before a guard is sent out. That could cut down on needless response calls while still keeping a human in charge when things turn serious.

Rollo Robotics plans to offer 1Rollo as a Robotics-as-a-Service product instead of a straight equipment sale. In plain terms, that means customers would subscribe to use the robot, with hardware, software updates, and support bundled into the package.

The subscription model could make the technology easier to adopt, especially for companies that do not want a big upfront purchase. It also fits the company’s pitch that robotic patrols can reduce operating costs compared with traditional guards or vehicles.

Still, the upside comes with the usual modern baggage. A connected robot that streams video and talks to the cloud raises questions about encryption, account protection, data storage, and what happens if the network drops in the middle of a patrol.

Privacy also matters here because a moving robot can feel more intrusive than a fixed camera. Employees, visitors, and contractors will want to know when they are being recorded, who can review the footage, and how long the data sticks around.

For now, 1Rollo is still a prototype, with commercial availability targeted for 2027. That leaves plenty of room for the design to evolve, but it also means the robot still has to prove it can handle long shifts, messy weather, and real security pressure without losing its edge.
