Norman Targets Graham As Establishment Pick In South Carolina Runoff

South Carolina’s special GOP Senate runoff has turned into a blunt fight over who carries the conservative banner and who gets backed by the old guard. Ralph Norman is pitching himself as the straight-shooting outsider, while Darline Graham’s camp says the establishment label misses the mark and ignores Trump’s support. The clash is shaping up as a test of message, record, and which candidate Republican voters trust when the pressure is on.

Norman’s latest campaign ad goes right at the heart of the battle. He argues that the “establishment” has already picked its favorite and makes clear he does not intend to play along with that script.

“The establishment has already” selected “their candidate,” he declared in the video, without naming Graham, his lone rival in the contest. “Same old playbook, same old insiders. I’m not their choice.”

He then tried to sharpen the contrast with a familiar conservative pitch, saying, “South Carolina needs a proven conservative with a record of fighting for you. You shouldn’t have to guess where your next senator stands: With me, you already know,” . That line is built to land with voters who want certainty more than polish, especially in a runoff where turnout can hinge on intensity.

The race moved into runoff mode after Norman and Graham finished first and second in the Aug. 11 special GOP primary. Now they are set for another round on Aug. 25, with everything narrowed down to a direct head-to-head contest.

That setup gives both campaigns a chance to draw a clean line between their brands. Norman is leaning on his long record and trying to turn the runoff into a referendum on conservative credibility, while Graham is using her appointment and Trump support to show she is already part of the party’s current center of gravity.

Graham’s path to the Senate seat came through Gov. Henry McMaster, who tapped her last month to fill the vacancy left by the death of her brother, Sen. Lindsey Graham. That appointment gave her immediate name recognition and a built-in platform, but it also handed critics an easy way to cast her as the continuation pick rather than the grassroots pick.

Her campaign pushed back hard on the idea that Trump belongs to the establishment crowd. “To suggest Donald Trump is part of the establishment is a joke. Senator Darline Graham has built a broad coalition of conservatives across South Carolina. Ralph is a party of one: himself,” spokesperson Abby Zilch said in a statement.

The response did not stop there. Zilch also went after Norman on spending and national loyalty, saying, “Ralph is a fiscal conservative when it is politically convenient. He voted no on a pay raise for our troops and benefits for veterans, but when COVID money benefited Ralph, all bets were off. Darline is a MAGA fighter who will help President Trump deliver. Ralph Norman will stand in the way,” she added.

Norman’s side is answering by piling up endorsements and presenting him as the safer conservative bet. His campaign says backing from figures such as Rick Scott and Mike Lee helps show that his support is not just local noise but part of a broader Republican lane.

“Ralph Norman is a businessman and the only proven conservative in this race. He has received wide support from conservatives including Senators Rick Scott and Mike Lee in Washington, D.C. to leaders across South Carolina, such as [former] Senator Jim DeMint and Former State Rep. Adam Morgan, among many others,” spokesperson Brittany Yanick said.

Yanick also framed the runoff as a simple choice for voters who want clarity instead of guesswork. “South Carolinians shouldn’t have to guess where their Senator stands on important issues; with Ralph, they already know,” she added. “His resume is his record unlike his opponent who is unknown and backed by Democrat donors. Next week, South Carolinians will vote for Ralph Norman to represent the Palmetto State for the next six years.”

Trump’s endorsement of Graham gives her campaign a big boost, but it also raises the stakes for Norman’s attempt to paint her as the wrong kind of Republican. In a race where labels matter almost as much as policy, both sides are racing to define the other before voters make up their minds.

That fight is spilling into the language each camp uses to describe itself. Norman wants to be seen as the tested fighter who never wobbles, while Graham wants to be seen as the Trump-backed conservative who can unite enough of the party to win the seat and keep moving.
