On his podcast, he drew a hard line between earlier political eras and the current one, saying, “Let’s be honest. Who you supported in 2008, 2012 is nowhere near as polarizing as who you support today,” Clark on his podcast. “[Trump] has clearly picked a side, [and] standing next to him gives the impression that you have to. Which means you stand in direct opposition to the majority of your teammates.”
Bosa, for his part, never looked interested in backing down. He was fined $11,255 for wearing the hat, but he made clear afterward that the whole thing was worth it to him. “It was well worth it,” Bosa said after the election, before being fined. “I don’t think my position on speaking about it is going to change, so clearly the nation spoke,” Bosa added. “We got what we got.”
That kind of bluntness has helped make Bosa one of the NFL’s more polarizing stars, especially when the conversation drifts away from football and into politics. He is not shy about making his views known, and that has made his every public move feel a little bigger than the average player’s. When he stepped back onto X, people were bound to read into it.
Clark’s ESPN exit also came during a broader wave of layoffs around the company, with several other well-known names affected as well. The timing only added more fuel to an already messy public story, especially because Clark has spent so much time talking about politics, culture, and the way players are viewed when they step outside the usual sports lane.
