I spent two weeks split between New York City and Jerusalem, and what I saw could not have been more different: an American city tolerating extremist talk on its streets and political stage, and an Israeli reality where people from many backgrounds live openly and freely. This piece traces that contrast, names the local causes of the danger, and explains why I am choosing action over silence.
On a weekday morning in Midtown, an Uber driver told me the world was under the devil’s control, that only a caliphate could fix things, and that women invite rape by the way they dress. He said it calmly, with zero sense of fringe, as if his views were part of polite conversation. Hearing that in the place that prides itself on tolerance felt like an alarm bell for anyone who cares about public safety and basic decency.
The disturbing part is how quickly public rhetoric can normalize this kind of thought. When elected leaders treat antisemitism and extremist ideas like political theater instead of grave threats, ordinary people feel emboldened. Zohran Mamdani and others who shrug at or excuse hateful speech are part of the problem because their words lower the social cost of extremism.

Then I flew to Jerusalem for the Sabbath and walked into something very different: children of different faiths playing together in a park without a second thought. At a skate park I watched Israeli and Arab teenagers share bikes and boards, trading tricks and jokes like any kids would. A young Arab boy named Ayub ran toward us with his arms lifted and his mother smiling, and the scene felt ordinary in the best way possible.
In Tel Aviv I met a gay Arab-Israeli relaxing on the beach, having a drink, and living openly in a way that would be unimaginable in much of the region. He talked about small freedoms that matter: walking down the street without fear, meeting friends at a cafe, being honest about who you are. It was a simple moment, yet a powerful one, because it underscored what real pluralism looks like when civic institutions and cultural norms protect diverse lives.

I will not be quiet about what I saw or what is at stake. I work with NCSY and its Jewish Student Union program because our schools are frontlines where kids learn whether prejudice is acceptable. I also partner with the Yad Vashem USA Foundation to preserve memory and truth, because when history is denied or minimized the next generation is left unarmed against hatred.
There is a clear choice ahead for New York: tolerate a slide toward ideological lawlessness or reassert values that protect minorities and personal freedom. Public safety and pluralism are not abstract concepts; they are the conditions that let families live, work, and flourish. If elected officials keep normalizing dangerous ideas, people who hold those ideas will feel safe to act on them, and Jewish communities will be the ones paying the price.
I refuse to let fear win silently in our streets or in our public squares. I will stand up for my children, my neighbors, and for the generations who fought for liberty and against persecution. Lady Liberty, I am worried about you.
