MSNBC host Alex Witt suggested that former President Donald Trump should “tone down his rhetoric” following the second assassination attempt against him in two months.
On Sunday, Secret Service agents thwarted a sniper attack aimed at Trump while he was playing golf at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach.
The assailant, armed with an AK-47-style rifle, was spotted by Secret Service agents from a distance of 300 to 500 yards.
A Secret Service agent fired at the suspect, forcing him to flee and abandon the weapon.
Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw confirmed that the suspect, 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh, was later arrested on I-95 in Martin County after a witness provided authorities with a photo of his vehicle.
Investigators found the rifle, two backpacks, and a GoPro camera hidden in nearby bushes.
Despite the attack, Witt questioned whether Trump and his campaign should “dial back their rhetoric.”
Instead of addressing the role of divisive media coverage and years of negative reporting about Trump, Witt seemed to place the blame on the former president for the toxic political environment.
Witt’s guest, Elise Jordan, expressed hope that Trump would use the incident as an opportunity for unity, but doubted he would.
Many observers found these comments shocking, accusing Witt and her network of deflecting responsibility for fueling the political climate that led to such an attack.
These are some sick individuals.
