The recent conviction of former President Donald Trump in a New York courtroom has triggered various responses, from jubilant celebrations on the left to a surge in financial contributions from the Republican base.
It seems that Trump not only enjoys widespread support from ordinary GOP voters, but also has the unequivocal backing of House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), who has promised retaliation against what he perceives as the politicization of the justice system against his party’s likely candidate, according to Fox News.
Vowing a deliberate approach to what he sees as a growing problem, Johnson said, “We are the rule of law party. Chaos is not a conservative value. We have to fight back, and we will with everything in our arsenal.”
“But,” he assured viewers, “we will do that within the confines of the rule of law.”
In attempt to differentiate his party from that of the opposition, the speaker added, “We believe in institutions. We are conservatives, and we are trying to conserve the greatest country in the history of the world. And its institutions are an important part of that. Our system of justice is an important part of that.”
Johnson also mentioned the ongoing investigations initiated by Jim Jordan (R-OH), the chair of the House Judiciary Committee, into the actions of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and his team in their pursuit of Trump in the “hush money” case.
A hearing scheduled for June 13 will involve testimony from Bragg and Matthew Colangelo, a former senior Justice Department official who left his position to work as a prosecutor on the Trump case, according to The Hill.
The Judiciary panel’s weaponization subcommittee is asking for information from both men regarding Jordan’s description of the “unprecedented political prosecution of Donald Trump.”
While Republicans have previously sought information from Bragg, it remains uncertain whether he will comply with the chairman’s request due to the ongoing likelihood of an appeal process in the case.
Not only Johnson and his House oversight allies, but also Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) are ready to seek retaliation for what many see as a corrupt and politically motivated prosecution of Trump.
Lee has taken the lead in an effort to impose harsh consequences on those he believes were involved in bringing the case against the former president.
According to Fox News, Lee has openly expressed his disgust over the events in New York last week, which he sees as part of a broader Democrat-led strategy to target Trump at any cost.
In a letter co-signed by several other GOP lawmakers, Lee announced that going forward, they will obstruct the progress of all Biden nominees and appropriations proposals as a form of protest against what they perceive as ongoing injustice at the hands of the administration and the Democratic Party.
“Strongly worded statements are not enough,” Lee said. “Those who turned our judicial system into a political cudgel must be held accountable,” and that is a bold statement of principle with which millions of Americans now assuredly agree.
