Maggie Goodlander Easily Wins Primary, Advances To House Showdown

Rep. Maggie Goodlander moved through her primary with little drama, clearing the way for a November faceoff in a district that has stayed firmly in Democratic hands for years. The race also keeps attention on the political reach of a household already tied to one of the most recognizable names from the Biden White House, while a sharper challenge from the left briefly tested how much room an incumbent has to move in a blue-leaning seat.

Goodlander represents a district that stretches across the western half of New Hampshire and reaches from the Massachusetts line all the way to the Canadian border. It is a place where local politics can still feel personal, even as national fights bleed into almost every contested race.

This was her first step into the seat in 2024 after replacing retiring Rep. Ann Kuster, and her position has been built on the kind of institutional advantage that comes with incumbency. New Hampshire may keep electing Republicans statewide for governor, but at the congressional level Democrats have held the edge for more than a decade.

The district has been under Democratic control since 2013, with a history that reaches back and forth between the parties over the years. Before that stretch, it was often in the hands of Rep. Charles Bass, a Republican who served two long runs in Congress, which gives the seat a more mixed political memory than its recent voting pattern suggests.

Goodlander’s family connection gives the race extra weight, since her husband is Jacob Sullivan, the former Biden National Security Adviser. Sullivan was a central figure during the messy withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, later playing a role in foreign policy as the Russia-Ukraine war began and in managing tensions with China.

That backdrop does not change the basic realities of the district, but it does make the matchup easier to notice beyond state lines. Voters are looking at a candidate whose personal and political circles are deeply linked to the Biden years, and that fact is not lost on critics who want to tie her more closely to the broader administration record.

Her primary challenger, New Hampshire state Rep. Paige Beauchemin, pushed from the left and argued that Goodlander had not been progressive enough or effective enough in her first term. That kind of challenge has become a familiar stress test for Democrats in places where party activists want sharper edges and less compromise.

Even so, the incumbent came through without being knocked off course. The result sends her into November with momentum intact, while the broader race still carries the usual tension that comes with a general election in a district that looks safe on paper but still demands constant attention.

The geography alone makes the seat interesting, since it is the more rural of New Hampshire’s two congressional districts and includes hard-to-ignore places such as Pittsburg in the state’s northern forests. Rural terrain often gives candidates fewer assumptions to lean on and more room for local issues to matter in the final stretch.

There is also a bigger reshuffling underway around the state’s federal delegation, with Rep. Chris Pappas giving up his House seat to run for the Senate seat being vacated by Jeanne Shaheen. That move will leave New Hampshire’s political map looking noticeably different by January, and Goodlander’s race will be one piece of a much larger transition.
