A federal judge has ordered the Trump administration to release the federal funds it had frozen for Maine. According to the ruling, the USDA must “immediately unfreeze and release to the state of Maine any federal funding that they have frozen or failed or refused to pay because of the state of Maine’s alleged failure to comply with the requirements of Title IX.” This decision also prevents the administration from interfering with Maine’s future federal funding without going through the proper legal procedures.
The conflict between President Donald Trump and Maine Governor Janet Mills escalated after a disagreement at the White House regarding an executive order. The USDA had previously frozen funding to Maine after the state refused to comply with Trump’s order banning transgender athletes from participating in girls’ and women’s sports. Trump had warned of cutting off federal funding if Maine continued to defy the order.
In response to the funding freeze, Maine officials took legal action against the USDA. They argued that withholding these funds impacted the state’s ability to provide meals to children, as well as disabled adults, in various programs. The judge sided with Maine, emphasizing that the freeze restricted crucial services.
Maine Senator Susan Collins has been vocal about resolving the issues between the state and the Trump administration. She has maintained her stance against transgender athletes in female sports while advocating for the restoration of federal funding. Meanwhile, the Department of Education has also initiated an investigation into the matter.
The Office for Civil Rights under the Department of Education referred the Maine Department of Education to the Department of Justice for allowing transgender athletes to compete in girls’ sports. This referral marks the second time in a month that Maine’s educational institutions have faced scrutiny from the DOJ over this issue.
Maine’s defiance of the executive order became more apparent when state Representative Laurel Libby highlighted a transgender athlete’s participation in a girls’ pole vault competition. Her actions sparked controversy, leading to her censure by the Democratic majority in Maine’s House. This censure has hindered her legislative activities.
