Authorities say a Dallas school police officer was shot with his own gun after stopping to help a man near a freeway, turning a routine assist into a violent struggle that now carries a federal firearms case. The suspect, identified as Jose Santiago Pantoja-Morales, is accused of being in the country illegally and of attacking the officer during a chaotic encounter that ended with the officer wounded in the leg and the suspect facing serious prison time.
According to prosecutors, the incident unfolded on Aug. 6 near the Lyndon B. Johnson Freeway after Pantoja-Morales jumped from a co-worker’s car and into the center median. A co-worker flagged down a Dallas Independent School District police officer, who was on patrol and agreed to help by giving him a ride to a safer spot. What looked like a simple act of help allegedly became the opening for a desperate grab at control.
During the ride, prosecutors say Pantoja-Morales started going through the officer’s bag in the back seat. The officer pulled over and tried to get him out of the car, but the man allegedly resisted, setting off a physical fight inside and around the vehicle. In the middle of that struggle, investigators say he grabbed the officer’s gun and fired once.
The shot struck the officer in the femoral artery of his right leg, a wound that can become life-threatening in a matter of minutes. Even after being hit, the officer managed to regain control of his weapon, while Pantoja-Morales ran off and was quickly caught by law enforcement. Another DISD officer rendered aid at the scene before the injured officer was taken to Parkland Hospital for treatment.
A federal grand jury later returned an indictment charging Pantoja-Morales with possession of a firearm by an illegal alien. Prosecutors say the case is now moving through federal court, with the defendant awaiting transfer to federal custody under a writ of habeas corpus filed Wednesday. If convicted, he could face up to 15 years in prison.
The Justice Department framed the case as more than just another violent street encounter. U.S. Attorney Ryan Raybould said the alleged attack was “an attack on the rule of law and a direct threat to public safety,” and added that officers put themselves in danger every day to protect the public. That language reflects the larger frustration many law enforcement leaders have voiced as officers are asked to do more with more hostility in the background.
The details are blunt and ugly: a uniformed officer trying to help, a suspect allegedly reaching for the officer’s gear, a shot fired at close range, and a fast-moving manhunt that ended with an arrest. Prosecutors also say the officer’s own firearm was used in the attack, making the case even more alarming from a law enforcement standpoint. For officers on patrol, it is the kind of scenario that can flip in seconds and leave no room for hesitation.
Officials said the case was investigated by the ATF Dallas Field Office and the Dallas Police Department, with an assistant U.S. attorney handling the prosecution. The federal charge does not settle every question around the case, but it does put the spotlight on how quickly a standard welfare check can spiral when violence erupts without warning. In Dallas, the aftermath is still tied to that split-second fight over a gun and the officer who survived it.
