How Long Ethernet Cables Last, And When They Fail

Ethernet cables tend to get ignored until something starts acting up, but they play a huge role in keeping a wired network fast and stable. They do not come with a neat expiration date, which is why their lifespan depends so much on quality, handling, location, and the wear that builds up over time.

There is no universal clock ticking down on every Ethernet cable. In a careful indoor setup, a cable can easily keep working for a decade or longer, and some people even report using the same run for 20 or 30 years. That kind of longevity usually comes from simple things like avoiding sharp bends, keeping the cable out of harm’s way, and not subjecting it to rough conditions.

Still, not every cable is built the same. Cable construction matters a lot, and pure copper generally holds up better than copper-clad aluminum, which can wear out faster and perform less reliably over time. A cheaper cable might look fine at first but age badly once real-world use starts pushing it.

Handling is another big deal. Cables that get crushed under furniture, kinked too tightly, stepped on, or chewed by pets are far more likely to fail early. Outdoor runs face an even tougher life because sunlight, rain, snow, and temperature swings can slowly punish the jacket and internal wiring.

The ends of the cable matter too, not just the wire itself. RJ45 connectors can wear down if they are plugged in and yanked out repeatedly, and ports can fail the same way if they are handled carelessly. Even a solid cable can be useless if the connector or port is damaged.

Power over Ethernet can also shorten the life of a lower-quality cable. When a cable runs hot under load, that extra stress can chip away at performance and make problems show up sooner than expected. It is one more reason why cable quality is not just about speed on paper, but about how well the setup survives daily use.

Replacement usually becomes obvious when the network starts misbehaving in ways that keep coming back. Frequent disconnects, slower speeds, weaker performance, or unreliable power delivery through PoE are all warning signs that something is off. A cable may not fail in one dramatic moment, but gradual decline can be just as frustrating.

Sometimes the issue is not damage at all, but a cable that is no longer up to the job. Older Cat5 wiring can feel cramped in a network that now supports gigabit speeds, especially when newer devices and faster internet plans are in the mix. In those cases, moving to Cat6 or Cat6a can make more sense, depending on the distance involved.

Longer cable runs also change the conversation. Patch cables are handy and flexible, but they are usually better suited to short connections between nearby devices rather than stretching across a home or office. Structured cabling often fits better when the goal is a cleaner, more dependable setup over distance.

The bigger picture is pretty simple: Ethernet cables can last a very long time, but only if the cable, the environment, and the handling all stay in their favor. When those pieces start working against the setup, the signs usually show up in speed, stability, and plain old reliability before the cable gives out completely.
