Georgia Lt. Gov. Jones Unveils Initiatives Dubbed ‘State-Level DOGE’

Lt. Gov. Burt Jones has drawn a parallel between a new bill in Georgia and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) established by former President Donald Trump. Known as the “Red Tape Rollback Act of 2025,” this bill was announced with the aim of ensuring that state agencies conduct a thorough review of rules and regulations every four years. It also allows lawmakers to request a “Small Business Impact Analysis” on pending legislation, a move intended to bolster transparency and accountability in governmental operations.

Jones, who had put forth a similar initiative last year, remains committed to reducing the regulatory burdens that often stifle businesses in Georgia. He emphatically stated, “Last year, we made positive changes to combat burdensome and costly regulations on behalf of workers and business owners all over Georgia.” As a business owner himself, Jones is acutely aware of the challenges posed by excessive government mandates and is determined to prioritize deregulation. He believes that this state initiative aligns perfectly with DOGE, President Trump’s strategy to enhance efficiency while curbing unnecessary spending and cutting through bureaucratic red tape at the federal level.

A comprehensive report by the Georgia Public Policy Foundation highlighted research from the Esper Group, which was commissioned to examine the state’s regulatory landscape. This study revealed that Georgia’s code is burdened with 18,160 regulations, over half of which require careful review. Such a high volume of rules undoubtedly poses challenges for businesses and individuals alike, often leading to unnecessary complications and obstacles.

J. Thomas Perdue, the author of the report, provided further insight during an interview with The Center Square. He pointed out that many regulations impacting businesses and consumers originate from unelected employees within bureaucratic agencies. “A lot of these are obviously done with safety in mind, product control, quality control and things like that,” Perdue noted. While the intention behind such regulations may be noble, the sheer volume and complexity often result in unintended consequences for hardworking Americans.

The drive to streamline regulations is not merely a political maneuver but a genuine effort to create a more conducive environment for economic growth and innovation. By eliminating unnecessary barriers, Georgia aims to attract more businesses and encourage entrepreneurship. This approach is in stark contrast to the heavy-handed bureaucratic measures often favored by left-leaning policymakers, which tend to stifle initiative and creativity.

Jones’ proposal underscores a fundamental belief in the power of the free market and the importance of allowing businesses to operate with minimal interference from the state. This philosophy champions individual initiative and the entrepreneurial spirit, which have long been hallmarks of American prosperity. By reducing red tape, Georgia seeks to empower its citizens and foster a climate where businesses can thrive without being bogged down by excessive regulation.

The Red Tape Rollback Act represents a significant step forward in the ongoing battle against overregulation. It reflects a broader trend across the nation, where states are increasingly recognizing the need to cut through bureaucratic hurdles to unlock their full economic potential. This movement is gaining momentum, particularly among leaders who prioritize economic growth and individual freedom over government control.

In embracing this approach, Georgia is setting a precedent for other states to follow. The emphasis on efficiency and accountability resonates with citizens who value responsible governance and fiscal prudence. This initiative is not just about reducing regulations; it’s about restoring trust in the system and demonstrating that government can be a force for good when it operates with transparency and integrity.

As Georgia moves forward with this legislation, it sends a clear message that it is open for business and ready to lead the way in fostering a dynamic and competitive economic landscape. This proactive stance is a testament to the state’s commitment to its residents and the belief that a thriving economy is built on the foundation of freedom and innovation.

The push to reassess and streamline regulations is a positive development that holds promise for the future. It aligns with broader national goals of promoting efficiency and responsible governance while ensuring that businesses have the opportunity to succeed without undue interference. By embracing this vision, Georgia is poised to become a beacon of economic opportunity and prosperity.
