Experts Warn: Your Daily Beauty Routine Might Be Damaging Your Hair

Emily Austin, a TV personality and clean beauty brand owner, recently chatted with Fox News Digital about the exciting changes the MAHA movement is pushing for. She believes American products should meet the high safety standards set by the European Union. In the world of hair care, brushing wet hair might seem harmless, but experts warn it can cause serious damage over time.

Dr. Mehmet Erdogan, a co-founder at Smile Hair Clinic, explained that brushing wet hair could weaken it at a “molecular level.” According to a study by the University of Manchester, wet hair responds differently to stress, which can lead to breakage. Erdogan shared with Fox News Digital that water swells the hair shaft, stretching the cuticle, which makes it more prone to breakage.

Erdogan emphasized that while wet hair can stretch more than dry hair, this doesn’t mean it’s more resilient. He cautioned that the internal protein structure gets damaged, making hair weaker. He noted, “Wet hair is more fragile, and rough brushing can cause breakage.”

Ashley DiMatteo, who runs Ashley Lauren Beauty Lounge in New York, confirmed seeing damage from brushing wet hair. She noted that hair damage often results from a mix of factors such as stress, hormones, and heat styling. Brianna Delvecchio, a stylist at DiMatteo’s salon, agreed, adding that using the wrong tool can worsen the damage.

Those with fine or chemically treated hair are particularly at risk when brushing wet, as their hair’s protein structure is already compromised. Delvecchio explained, “Brushing is necessary — just do it gently and in the right way.” Skipping brushing can lead to tangles, which can also cause damage.

DiMatteo advises clients to take a “gentle approach” by protecting hair from heat and avoiding rough brushing. She also stresses the importance of discussing scalp health, nutrition, and lifestyle with clients. She said, “And most importantly, don’t ever feel embarrassed or shy to speak to your stylist or local salon.”

Experts recommend using wide-tooth combs or flexible detangling brushes to minimize damage. Delvecchio mentioned that flexible bristles are effective for detangling without causing too much tension. A leave-in product can help soften and hydrate hair, making combing easier.

Erdogan warned that adding heat to wet hair can “multiply the damage.” He suggested letting straight hair partially air-dry before combing, a tip also recommended by the American Academy of Dermatology Association. Techniques like starting from the bottom and working up when brushing can prevent damage.

Delvecchio stressed the importance of being gentle with hair, especially when wet. She advised using heat protectants, reducing heat tool temperatures, and avoiding overlapping bleach. Regular brushing, whether wet or dry, can prevent tangles and maintain hair health.

Angelica Stabile, a lifestyle reporter for Fox News Digital, contributed to this discussion. She highlighted that with the right habits, hair can remain strong and healthy. For more health tips, you can check out articles on the Fox News website.
