Diamondbacks Ban Longtime Season-Ticket Holder for Repeated Interference

The Arizona Diamondbacks have drawn a line in the sand with one of their die-hard fans. Dave McCaskill, who’s been a dedicated season-ticket holder and proud Advantage Membership account owner, recently found himself in hot water with the team. This membership has given him perks like access to special events and early postseason tickets, but after being tangled in yet another incident of fan interference, the Diamondbacks decided to ban him for the remainder of the season and cancel his membership.

Tim Tawa, a player for the Diamondbacks, was seen leaping for a ball during a game against the San Francisco Giants at Chase Field. A statement from the team said, “This particular fan has been involved in multiple offenses at Chase Field…” They did, however, leave the door open for McCaskill’s return in 2026, provided he sticks to their Fan Code of Conduct. The incident in question took place when McCaskill reached for a ball hit by Giants’ third baseman Christian Koss, narrowly missing Tawa’s glove.

The ball was initially ruled as an out, but after review, the call was changed to a double, leading to McCaskill’s ejection from the ballpark. Clips of McCaskill making similar plays on potential home run balls quickly surfaced online, fueling the debate around his actions. McCaskill, speaking to Fox 10 Phoenix, insisted, “I’m a D-Backs fan. I would never want to do anything to hurt the D-backs or to have them lose the game.”

While McCaskill admitted to being “ejected three times,” he later clarified it was “technically… twice.” He explained his side of the story, saying, “I caught the ball, came right down, and you see my glove hit the yellow, the top. So I think the ball would have bounced on top and gone over.” Fans are prohibited from reaching over the wall to snag a ball, but once it crosses into the stands, it’s fair game.

Social media has been abuzz with opinions, with Jomboy Media highlighting four incidents where McCaskill was part of similar play reviews. Some other social media users even suggested he has been involved in five such reviews. Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo weighed in, stating, “What I can comment on is last night, the play happened, I want the play to play. I want the play to be played out… I want plays to be made by the players.”

On the opposing side, San Francisco Giants manager Bob Melvin was seen having a heated exchange with the home plate umpire after being ejected from the game, adding to the drama. Meanwhile, McCaskill mentioned to the New York Post that he has “followed” the well-known ballhawk Zack Hample, who has caught over 10,000 baseballs and often finds himself under scrutiny for similar antics at games.

Hample’s reputation for snagging baseballs has made him a controversial figure in the world of sports fandom. This connection drew further attention to McCaskill’s actions and raised questions about fan behavior at games. As the season progresses, the incident serves as a reminder of the fine line between passionate support and interference.
