Cybertruck Tow Test Shows How Fast Range Drops With A Boat

The Cybertruck’s range got pushed into the real world the hard way when an owner hooked up a 6,500-pound boat and took on a 350-mile trip. That kind of test strips away the glossy brochure talk and shows how an electric truck behaves when the load is big, the miles are long, and every extra stop starts to matter. It also gives a clearer picture of why towing changes the game so much for EV drivers.

Tesla originally talked big about the Cybertruck’s range before launch, but the number that actually showed up in testing was lower. Even then, the truck’s range looked decent on paper, yet real-world driving has a way of exposing the gap between ideal conditions and everyday use. In outside testing, the truck’s range came in below expectations, and once a boat entered the picture, the distance it could cover dropped again.

The surprising part is that the range loss was not just about brute weight. The boat was heavy, sure, but it still sat below the Cybertruck’s tow rating, so this was not some absurd overload situation. What really chewed through battery life was the whole towing package working against the truck at once, from extra drag to the need for harder acceleration and stronger braking.

Speed played a huge role too. The owner said the trip actually went better than expected, but faster driving burned through range much more quickly and forced more charging stops. The slower pace at 55 mph sounds boring, but in this case it helped the truck get there sooner because it reduced the time lost at chargers and kept the battery from draining so fast.

That is one of the least glamorous truths about EV towing. The faster you go, the more energy the truck needs to push air, pull weight, and recover from every stop-and-go moment on the road. Add a boat behind it, and the whole setup becomes a tug-of-war between battery capacity and physics.

Charging is another part of the story that people sometimes gloss over. Towing an EV usually means more charging breaks, and those breaks can be awkward when you are dragging a big trailer or boat that does not fit neatly into every charging lane. Even when the station works out, getting back to a useful charge can eat about 45 minutes per stop, which turns a long trip into a day that keeps stretching.

That does not mean the Cybertruck failed the test. It still handled a heavy tow and completed a serious road trip, which is more than plenty of gas trucks would brag about if the numbers were flipped. The takeaway is not that the truck is weak, but that electric range shrinks fast when the workload gets ugly.

There are other EV pickups that promise more range on paper, like the Chevrolet Silverado EV with its hefty range rating and strong towing ability. Still, the Cybertruck is not as far off the pace as critics like to claim, and this kind of trip showed that it can do real work even if it asks the driver to plan carefully. That planning part is the catch, because with a boat in tow, the road stops being about convenience and starts being about strategy.

For buyers thinking about electric trucks, this kind of test is the one that matters. Weekend hauling, long drives, and weather changes all hit range harder than most people expect, and towing only makes that more obvious. The Cybertruck may look odd, but when the trailer gets hitched and the miles start stacking up, the real question is not style, it is how far the battery can keep you moving before the next stop becomes unavoidable.
