Cummins Big Cam, Why The 855 Diesel Stood Out

The Cummins Big Cam earned its place in trucking history by doing a few things extremely well at once. It was tough, efficient, and built for serious work, which made it stand out in a crowded diesel field and win over drivers who cared more about pulling power than flash.

Cummins used the Big Cam name for its 14-liter 855 diesel, first rolling out the technology in 1976. The big change was right in the name, since the engine got a larger camshaft with a journal diameter that grew from 2 inches to 2.5 inches. That upgrade let Cummins raise injection pressure from roughly 11,000 psi to 14,000 psi, pushing fuel in faster and giving combustion more room to do its job efficiently.

That tighter, more controlled burn helped the engine squeeze more value out of every gallon. Compared with the earlier version, the Big Cam 14-liter delivered about a 6% boost in fuel economy, while also cutting down smoke, noise, and emissions. For truck operators trying to move heavy loads without wasting fuel, that kind of improvement mattered a lot.

The engine did not just win points for efficiency. The 855 Big Cam also built a reputation for low-speed operation, strong low-end torque, and long-term durability, three traits that are pure gold in heavy-duty trucking. It was the kind of engine that could pull hard without acting busy, and that calm strength helped make it one of the most respected inline-6 diesels ever built.

Cummins did not leave the Big Cam alone after its debut. The lineup kept evolving with the Big Cam I in 1977, then the Big Cam II in 1979, followed by the Big Cam III in 1982 and the Big Cam IV in 1984. Each step brought changes to the fuel system and air handling, along with tweaks meant to reduce the power required to run the engine itself.

Those updates kept the Big Cam competitive, but they also exposed a growing problem. As injection pressures climbed to satisfy stricter emissions rules, the fuel system had to work harder and harder, and not every part of the setup liked the pressure. The later 88 Big Cam IV, with its reduced drain flow fuel injectors, showed how the push for more pressure could strain reliability even when the design goals were good.

That tension between performance and durability eventually nudged the Big Cam aside. Cummins replaced the 855 Big Cam with the N14 in 1990, a next-generation heavy-duty highway engine that brought full-authority electronic controls into the mix. It also introduced air-to-air aftercooling for the family, with power outputs ranging from 460 hp to 525 hp.

The N14 kept the brand moving forward, but the Big Cam had already left a deep mark. It had become one of those engines people remembered for the right reasons, the kind that built trust through miles, torque, and a reputation that refused to fade. Even decades later, the name still carries weight anywhere diesel engines are judged by how hard they work and how long they last.
