Council Fires Last Officer, Leaving Small Town Without Police Amid Growing Drama

A small Texas town has found itself in the midst of turmoil after its city council decided to dismiss its last standing police officer. On Monday, the Hawkins City Council voted to remove Lt. Eric Tuma from his position. The council cited “dereliction of sworn duties” and “abandonment of post” as reasons for his termination, according to their agenda meeting notes.

Mayor Debbie Rushing explained that they had received reports of Tuma not responding to calls. This information was shared during the council meeting, as reported by KLTV. Council member Eric Maloy expressed his disbelief, stating, “I’m very distraught and can’t believe it.”

Residents of Hawkins, a tight-knit community, are feeling the absence of their police force. Maloy mentioned that Tuma had taken time off for a family emergency. Both the city and the Wood County Sheriff’s Office were informed about his absence, KLTV noted.

The Hawkins Police Department has been experiencing a wave of resignations and terminations since 2021. Former chief Guy McKee resigned in February 2024, with Tuma stepping in as interim chief. At that time, two other officers and Municipal Court Judge Kyle Waggner also resigned.

Hawkins, with its population of 1,300, lies 20 miles north of Tyler, Texas. The community is now without any police officers following the council’s decision. This comes after Rushing’s earlier decision to fire three officers in February.

Rushing stated that those officers were dismissed due to “improper hiring practices.” The officers were not approved by the city council, leaving Tuma as the last officer. “It’s amazing to me that there are still good cops that want to work in small towns,” Rushing told KETK.

Shortly after the February firings, Rushing herself faced legal trouble. She was arrested in May on charges of allegedly “tampering with government records with intent to harm.” The town is further embroiled in legal battles, with Maloy revealing that there are 16 lawsuits against the city.

Many of these lawsuits have been initiated by former officers. The situation has put significant strain on the small town’s resources. Fox News Digital attempted to contact the Mayor’s office and police department for comments.

The absence of a police force is an unprecedented challenge for Hawkins. Residents are concerned about safety and governance moving forward. The community is in a state of uncertainty as they navigate these complex issues.

The recent events have left many questioning the leadership decisions within the city council. The town’s leadership is under scrutiny as the legal battles continue. Hawkins’ residents hope for resolution and stability in the near future.

This situation underscores the importance of transparency and proper governance in small towns. The community’s resilience is being tested as they face these unprecedented challenges. Many are calling for a return to the previous state of governance.

The city council’s decisions have far-reaching implications for Hawkins. The community’s trust in its leaders is being challenged. Residents are seeking answers and accountability from those in positions of power.

The legal troubles surrounding Mayor Rushing add another layer to the town’s challenges. As Hawkins grapples with these issues, the need for strong leadership is more evident than ever. The community’s faith in their leaders will be crucial in navigating this crisis.
