After 190 days and roughly 3,000 miles on the road, the walk across America hits a forced pause for surgery and a cardiology check, but the mission to build a Leadership and Economic Opportunity Center on Chicago’s South Side keeps driving every step and decision forward.
Tonight my heart feels heavy, and I am honest about that weight. Walking across heat and cold, through small towns and forgotten highways, has drained every reserve I carried when I started. The doctors have scheduled heel surgery and want a cardiologist to take a look, so for now the march stops so the body can heal.
I did not plan to pause; my instinct was to keep moving until the job was done. The truth is pain has a way of forcing questions you cannot ignore, making you wonder if the sacrifice is worth it. Even so, the reason behind every mile refuses to let me fold.
The trouble began with a pyogenic granuloma on my heel, a growth I had removed before only to find it back and more painful. Each step became a negotiation with sharp, relentless pain that made the simplest act of walking an ordeal. Pain strips away distractions and exposes whether your purpose is real or just a story you tell yourself.
My purpose is not a story, it is concrete: a $25 million community center where young men and women can learn trades and find mentors. Those kids did not ask for obstacles and they do not get a pause button while I recover. Every mile I took was for them, and that keeps me tethered to the road even when my body demands rest.
I will not pretend I am unafraid. Fear is honest and it sits beside me; it does not need theater to make its presence known. What I have instead is a stubborn faith that has carried me through colder nights and meaner days than this one.
There are words I keep turning to when the doubt grows loud, words that have held others through dark stretches. Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Those words shift the weight off my shoulders and remind me my endurance is not merely mine to manufacture.
