Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is looking more likely to head the Department of Health and Human Services after his recent Senate Finance Committee hearing.

The Democrats, instead of leveraging points of agreement, chose to critique Kennedy’s past positions. This approach, noted by Republican strategist Brad Todd, was seen as a misstep that inadvertently brought Kennedy closer to the Republican side.

Todd shared his thoughts on CNN, remarking that the Democrats missed a chance by targeting Kennedy on divisive topics. He found the hearing entertaining but criticized Democrats like Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders for making Kennedy’s nomination easier for Republicans to support. According to Todd, Warren could have taken a different strategy by focusing on common policy ground with Kennedy.

He suggested Warren might have gained more leverage by aligning herself with Kennedy on issues like abortion and affirmative action. Instead, Todd believed she used the hearing for political dramatics, aiming for sound bites rather than strategy. He emphasized that such theatrics only made Kennedy’s case stronger.

Todd viewed the hearing as a performance, one that might have inadvertently bolstered Kennedy’s position. Following the Finance Committee event, Kennedy appeared before the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee. Although no vote was needed to move his nomination forward, some Republicans still expressed hesitation.

Senator Bill Cassidy, a physician from Louisiana, remains cautious about Kennedy’s nomination. During a CNN segment, Kasie Hunt inquired if Cassidy might oppose Kennedy. Todd noted that several Republicans have reservations about Kennedy’s liberal history.

Todd explained that Kennedy’s ideology aligns more with Warren than with Cassidy. Despite this, Kennedy brought voters to Trump, which complicates Republican opposition. Cassidy, however, voiced concerns about Kennedy’s controversial vaccine and pharmaceutical industry statements.

Cassidy stressed his duty to assess Kennedy’s trustworthiness in supporting public health initiatives. He expressed uncertainty, indicating his need for further evaluation. Cassidy’s comments highlight the ongoing Republican deliberation over Kennedy’s nomination.
