Donations From CCP-Linked Figure Put Mikie Sherrill on the Defensive
Most polls suggest New Jersey Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mikie Sherrill holds a lead over her Republican rival Jack Ciattarelli. That edge is getting tested after reporting about campaign money tied to a Chinese-linked businessman. Voters and rivals are asking how these donations passed basic vetting.
The controversy centers on Pin Ni, a donor who poured tens of thousands into groups backing Sherrill. Ni gave $60,000 through two donations to the One Giant Leap super PAC supporting Sherrill and also donated $5,800 directly to her campaign, the maximum allowed by law. Those numbers are now the focus of scrutiny from the right.
Campaign finance rules require donations be made by U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents, and reporting says Ni’s status isn’t clear. That ambiguity is why Republicans are pushing for documents and transparency. This is not a minor bookkeeping question when national security concerns are raised.
Ni is tied to Wanxiang America Corporation, the Chicago arm of the Chinese-based Wanxiang Group, and his family links reach to the company’s founder. Wanxiang was established by Lu Guanqiu, Ni’s late father-in-law, and China in 2021 honored Guanqiu with the “National Outstanding Communist Party Member” award. A company release praised him for his “pursuit of communism as a lifelong ideal and practice” and said he had “always listened to the [Chinese Communist] Party and followed the Party.”
Chinese President Xi Jinping publicly lauded Guanqiu, calling him “in line with the Party Central Committee,” and adding, “He always actively does what our Party committees and governments at all levels advocate.” Those endorsements are the reason critics point to a clear political alignment. It’s a red flag to voters who distrust CCP influence.
Michael Lucci, founder of the global security group State Armor, told the New York Post that Sherrill’s connection with Ni is “disqualifying.” “The donor, Pin Ni, has an extensive history of assisting the CCP’s political warfare and influence operations upon the U.S., and of generally aligning with and carrying out party commands,” Lucci complained. Security experts and Republican strategists say such claims demand immediate answers.
Reporting also noted Sherrill is not the only Democratic figure who has accepted money from donors tied to China; Virginia candidate Abigail Spanberger faced similar scrutiny after taking large sums. That campaign reportedly accepted $50,000 from a businessman with Chinese Communist Party connections, which Republicans say undercuts claims to be tough on foreign threats. A spokesperson for Republican candidate Winsome Earle-Sears said, “Taking $50,000 from someone with clear Chinese Communist Party ties tells us all we need to know. You can’t claim to stand up to foreign threats while pocketing money from someone celebrated by the CCP.”
If it turns out donations came from non-U.S. nationals, those gifts would violate federal law and could prompt enforcement action or fines. Republicans are already demanding audits and immediate disclosure of donor records so voters can see who is bankrolling the race. The issue is as much legal as it is political.
For voters wary of foreign influence, the optics here are ugly: a candidate reliant on money tied to a family celebrated by the CCP. That reality plays into broader Republican warnings about national security and campaign integrity. Expect the debate over donor vetting to follow Sherrill through the campaign season.
