Brendan Carr Named FCC Chair, Vows to Protect Free Speech

President-elect Donald Trump has named Brendan Carr as the next permanent Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), a move that underscores the administration’s intent to tackle Big Tech and bolster free speech. Carr, a Republican FCC commissioner since 2017, has been an outspoken critic of what he calls a “censorship cartel” and a staunch advocate for deregulation and innovation.

Trump announced Carr’s appointment via a statement praising his leadership in defending free expression and reducing bureaucratic overreach. “Brendan has been a warrior for Free Speech,” Trump wrote, adding that Carr’s efforts have “fought back against the regulatory Lawfare that has stifled Americans’ Freedoms and held back our Economy.” Carr’s current term as an FCC commissioner runs through 2029, ensuring he will have a long tenure as chairman.

Carr, in response to the nomination, expressed his gratitude on X (formerly Twitter):

“Thank you, President Trump! I am humbled and honored to serve as Chairman of the FCC. Now we get to work.”

Carr’s leadership is expected to bring a sharp focus on dismantling perceived barriers to free speech. He has repeatedly criticized major tech companies—including Facebook, Google, Apple, and Microsoft—for allegedly colluding to suppress dissenting voices.

“The censorship cartel must be dismantled,” Carr tweeted, accusing these companies, alongside groups like NewsGuard and certain fact-checkers, of enforcing “one-sided narratives.”

Carr’s agenda includes holding Big Tech accountable for what he views as censorship and misinformation. He has vowed to push back against content moderation practices that he argues limit free speech and skew public discourse.

In a recent interview, Carr doubled down on his stance, warning against the consolidation of power among tech giants. He has also voiced concerns about their influence over public information, calling for transparency and accountability.

Carr has also been a vocal opponent of net neutrality, describing it as a government overreach that could hinder innovation. Net neutrality, a set of rules aimed at preventing internet service providers from blocking or throttling content, was repealed during Trump’s first term but could be revived under a Democratic-led FCC.

Carr called the effort to reinstate net neutrality a “power grab” and warned that it would shift focus away from addressing issues like Big Tech censorship. “Net neutrality is an unlawful overreach by the administrative state,” Carr said, citing concerns about regulatory burdens stifling growth and competition.

Another key area of focus for Carr will be national security, particularly in relation to the Chinese-owned social media platform TikTok. Carr has been a leading voice advocating for a TikTok ban, labeling the platform a dual threat: a tool for surveillance and a medium for cultural influence by the Chinese government.

“If TikTok was simply a platform for free expression, that would be one thing,” Carr stated. “But its admitted role in espionage, including spying on U.S. journalists, poses a serious national security risk.”

Carr believes banning TikTok aligns with protecting the First Amendment while also safeguarding national security interests.

With Carr at the helm, the FCC is expected to prioritize free speech protections, deregulation, and enhanced accountability for tech companies. His leadership could also see increased support for rural broadband initiatives and other efforts aimed at fostering innovation without excessive government interference.

As Trump continues to fill key positions in his administration, Carr’s appointment signals a strong commitment to challenging the dominance of Big Tech and promoting open communication platforms. In the coming months, all eyes will be on the FCC to see how Carr’s vision unfolds and impacts the digital landscape.

By placing a seasoned advocate for deregulation and free speech at the FCC’s helm, Trump’s administration appears poised to reshape the agency’s priorities, emphasizing less government control and more individual freedoms in the online space.
