Toyota has joined Daimler Truck and Volvo Group to form Cellcentric, a fuel-cell venture aimed at making hydrogen practical for heavy-duty trucking, and this piece looks at why hydrogen matters alongside battery electrics, the infrastructure and cost hurdles, Toyota’s long game with fuel cells, and what the partnership could mean for long-haul freight and the wider push to cut emissions.

The public conversation about clean transport has mostly favored battery electric vehicles, and that trend still drives a lot of investment and hype. The announcement that Toyota, Daimler Truck, and Volvo would be equal partners in Cellcentric is not just a PR move; it’s a strategic play to scale fuel-cell systems for trucks and industrial machines. The stated goal is plain: build better fuel-cell tech, produce it at scale, and make zero-emissions trucking realistic for long routes. Underneath that goal is a bet that hydrogen can solve problems batteries struggle with today on highways and cross-border freight lanes.

Toyota’s work on hydrogen isn’t new — it goes back decades and led to the Mirai in 2014, one of the first mass-produced hydrogen cars. In practice the Mirai showed the tech can work, but the market stayed tiny because refueling stations are sparse outside of pockets like California. Rather than abandon the idea, Toyota shifted more of that hard-earned expertise into commercial vehicles and testing in Europe, where freight patterns make hydrogen’s strengths more obvious.

Building fuel cells and rolling out a refueling network are different fights, and the network is the tougher one. That’s why the three-way alliance makes sense: Toyota brings deep fuel-cell R&D, Daimler Truck brings commercial vehicle design and logistics know-how, and Volvo brings international scale and manufacturing reach. Pooling those strengths lowers costs, speeds development, and makes lobbying for infrastructure investment more credible when the partners can promise volume.

TOYOTA IS USING AI TO DESIGN BETTER CARS FASTER sits alongside these efforts as a reminder that automakers aren’t closing the door on batteries or software-driven advances. Companies are still pouring money into batteries, charging, and EV production, and Toyota itself is expanding its electric lineup while keeping fuel-cell work going.
