Bruce Pearl, the head coach of the Auburn Tigers men’s basketball team, recently criticized former President Barack Obama for his comments on the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Obama had suggested that aid to the Palestinians should continue, regardless of hostage negotiations with Israel. Pearl, who chairs the U.S. Israel Education Association, took issue with Obama’s approach, particularly his absence of a call for Hamas to release hostages taken during the October 2023 attacks.
In a social media post, Pearl expressed his disapproval, saying, “You gave billions to Iran and Hamas creating this mess and not one word from you calling for THEM to release the hostages, surrender and end the War! Tell Hamas to 1) Quit stealing and reselling aid 2) Stop attacking GHF workers who are feeding Gazans. 3) Leave and end suffering.” This statement was a response to Obama’s comments on the situation in Gaza, where reports of starvation have surfaced, despite Israel’s recent efforts to deliver aid to the area.
Fox News correspondent Trey Yingst has reported on the hunger crisis in the region, indicating that it is indeed a growing concern. Obama, in his social media post, highlighted the need for immediate action to prevent starvation, linking to a New York Times article that painted a grim picture of the situation. He emphasized the necessity for aid to reach Gaza, stating, “Aid must be permitted to reach people in Gaza. There is no justification for keeping food and water away from civilian families.”
Former President Donald Trump also weighed in on the issue, noting the U.S.’s efforts to provide aid to Gaza and criticizing Europe for not doing enough. He echoed the claims that Hamas has been intercepting and misusing the aid meant for Palestinians, a point that has been frequently asserted by Israeli officials. “When I see the children and when I see, especially over the last couple of weeks people are stealing the food, they’re stealing the money, they’re stealing the money for the food. They’re stealing weapons, they’re stealing everything,” Trump mentioned to reporters.
Pearl, who is Jewish, has been vocal about his stance against Hamas and the broader conflict in the Middle East, especially following the recent terror attacks. During an episode of the “Being Jewish Podcast” in June, Pearl shared his motivations for speaking out. He questioned the lack of education on Middle Eastern affairs in schools and criticized the spread of misinformation on social media. “Here’s the deal. One of the reasons why I do it, it’s really simple. What is your Middle Eastern studies course teaching you in high school? Oh, you don’t have one? Oh, so then let’s go on social media and let’s read the lies and the propaganda,” Pearl remarked.
He further elaborated on the misconceptions surrounding the conflict, pointing out the lack of awareness and education among younger generations. “In the back of their minds it’s, ‘Maybe they are right. Maybe the Jews did steal the land. Maybe they did run them out of their home. I don’t know.’ Well, that’s because you’ve never been taught. So you’re listening to the loudest voices, [which is] a very, very loud minority.”
