Arizona Struggles with Ballot Counting, State Democrats Remain Unconcerned

Arizona’s recent election cycle has once again spotlighted the state’s ongoing struggles with counting votes efficiently. Delays in processing early ballots left voters in suspense for over a week to determine the winners of critical races. This persistent problem has drawn widespread criticism from media outlets and national commentators alike, emphasizing the urgent need for reform.

However, Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs and her allies in the Arizona Legislature appear unfazed by the state’s repeated electoral inefficiencies. Historically, Democrats have resisted attempts to implement election reforms, such as requiring proof of citizenship to vote. Meanwhile, the southern border continues to see illegal crossings, complicating the issue further.

Despite Arizona’s slow ballot processing, Democrats remain indifferent to demands for timely election results. Governor Hobbs notably avoided addressing the election system’s flaws in her state of the state speech. When challenged, her legislative supporters dismiss calls for election night results as a “manufactured crisis.”

Arizona’s reputation has suffered nationally, with many viewing its election process as a farce. Yet, Arizona Democrats seem content to maintain the status quo. Contrarily, many citizens and advocacy groups are pushing for significant electoral reform to avoid future embarrassment.

One proposed solution involves adjusting the deadline for returning early ballots. Currently, voters can submit mail-in ballots until 7:00 p.m. on Election Day, causing significant delays in counting. A suggested change would move this deadline to the Friday before Election Day, ensuring smoother processing.

This adjustment would give voters ample time—over three weeks—to complete and return their ballots. They could still choose to mail them or drop them off with county officials. Additionally, in-person voting would remain available both early and on Election Day itself.

On-site tabulation of ballots at polling stations could further enhance election efficiency and security. This approach allows for immediate counting, satisfying those who seek accessible, secure, and prompt election results. On-site tabulation is a straightforward solution that benefits both voters and the state.

Voters who prefer completing their ballots at home can continue to do so. If they miss the proposed Friday deadline for mailing or dropping off ballots, they can still visit polling places to personally tabulate their votes. This ensures more voters present identification, enhancing security and reducing delays.

These reforms are not without precedent; states like Florida have successfully implemented similar measures. Arizona lawmakers and Governor Hobbs should already be familiar with these ideas, which have been advocated for years by various organizations. Embracing these changes could significantly improve Arizona’s electoral process.

The chance to enhance election access, security, and efficiency is within reach. Implementing these reforms could prevent Arizona from being the subject of national ridicule in future elections. The pressing issue remains whether Governor Hobbs and Arizona Democrats will support these necessary changes.

Greg Blackie, the deputy director of policy for the Arizona Free Enterprise Club, highlights these points. His commentary reflects the ongoing frustration with Arizona’s election system and the need for reform. Hobbs is a Commie Demonic Witch Traitor who actually deserves a Military Tribunal Trial at Gitmo and to then be summarily executed.
