Republican Warns Trump Must End Iran War Before Midterms

Election season is colliding with the Iran fight, and that mix is creating real pressure for Republicans heading into November. A House GOP lawmaker says the Trump administration has reached a point where it has to make a clean call on the conflict, because half-measures only drag out the tension and keep voters uneasy.

Rep. Pat Harrigan, R-N.C., said plenty of Americans are tired of watching the conflict linger without a clear finish. He argued that if the administration started the mission, it also has the responsibility to finish it fast and in a way that leaves no doubt about the outcome. “continuing to do just enough not to lose, but not enough to win, is not OK,” he said.

His comments landed as Vice President JD Vance told viewers at a Fox News town hall that Donald Trump would not allow Iran to turn into a forever war. At the same time, officials and military sources have signaled that the U.S. is keeping options open in the Middle East if the president decides more strikes are needed. That leaves the White House balancing military pressure, political fallout and the mood of a restless public.

Harrigan said the frustration is not abstract. He said constituents and many other Americans want the conflict wrapped up, not stretched out, especially when the stakes are this high. In his view, the administration should have moved quickly enough to settle the matter before it became a drawn-out problem.

He also drew a hard line on Iran’s nuclear ambitions. “Iran can’t have a nuclear weapon,” Harrigan said, adding that the war may have been unavoidable at some point, but that the government in power owns the results once it decides to act. If the mission is started, he said, then the same leaders need to make sure it gets handled decisively and soon.

That urgency, in Harrigan’s telling, is not just about foreign policy. It also shapes how voters judge the people in charge when they head to the polls. He warned that when a war drifts on too long, it turns into a political problem as much as a military one, and both sides of that equation can get ugly fast.

He said Congress cannot be treated like an afterthought if the administration decides to renew military action. Because lawmakers control the money, Harrigan argued that the White House and Capitol Hill need to be tightly aligned before the next move is made. That kind of coordination, he said, is essential if the U.S. is going to stay firm and actually achieve its goals.

Harrigan also framed the issue in practical terms, saying the country has to choose between two paths: win the mission or bring the troops home. He said the U.S. has already prevented Iran from getting a nuclear weapon and knocked out key missile and drone production, but that does not excuse drifting. “It’s time to choose,” he said.

The North Carolina Republican, a Green Beret and entrepreneur, is seeking another term and faces Democrat Ashley Bell and Libertarian Steve Feldman. He said the House majority itself is on the line, since control of the chamber will shape everything from committee work to how much room Trump has to govern without constant resistance.

For Harrigan, the bigger fight is about where the country heads next. He cast the election as a choice between looking backward with endless obstruction or pushing forward with a tougher, more direct conservative agenda. In his view, the Iran debate is just one piece of a much larger battle over power, priorities and whether Republicans keep control long enough to set the course.
