Ford Teases $30K EV Truck With Interactive Unicorn Wrap

Ford is pushing its next electric truck into the spotlight with a clever camouflage stunt that does more than hide the bodywork. The company is trying to build curiosity around a cheaper mid-size EV pickup, while also showing that it has learned a few hard lessons from the F-150 Lightning era. At the center of it all is a new truck aimed at a $30,000 starting price, a 2027 target, and a lot of questions Ford still has to answer.

That earlier Lightning experiment was a strong product on paper, but it never turned into the kind of hit Ford wanted. The truck launched in 2022, faded out in late 2025, and ended up helping drive a painful $19.5 billion reset in Ford’s EV plans. After that shake-up, Ford shifted toward a fresh strategy built around the Ford Universal EV Platform, backed by a $5 billion investment and centered on a more affordable electric pickup.

Now the new truck is showing up in testing, and the wrap is doing most of the talking. It is loaded with playful graphics like hearts, dogs, soccer balls, and sailboats, but the real trick is a QR code hidden in plain sight. Scan it, and users land on a Ford page that greets them with the message that they have spotted a Unicorn.

The website is not just a gimmick either. It includes videos that lay out Ford’s thinking for the project, including commentary from vice president of advanced development projects Alan Clarke. Ford says the page will keep evolving as the truck moves closer to production, which suggests the company wants this rollout to feel more open and interactive than a normal teaser campaign.

Pricing is the big hook here, and Ford has made that clear from the start. The company says the truck should start around $30,000, which would put it in a much tougher but more interesting part of the market. Ford also wants the truck to deliver performance similar to a Mustang EcoBoost, while giving buyers more passenger room than a Toyota RAV4.

There is also a growing belief that Ford may bring back the Ranchero name, though nothing official has been confirmed. The old nameplate has some history behind it, last appearing on a ute sold from 1958 to 1979. Ford regained the rights to the Ranchero name in April 2026, which naturally added fuel to the speculation.

Keeping the price down appears to be the whole game with this platform. Ford is reportedly using 20% fewer parts and fasteners, along with a smaller and lighter wiring harness than on earlier EVs. It is also moving to a 400-volt architecture instead of an 800-volt setup, which means giving up some charging speed in exchange for lower cost.

The battery plan follows the same logic. Ford intends to use prismatic lithium-iron-phosphate batteries, which are generally cheaper than more conventional EV battery packs. That move could help protect the sticker price, but Ford is still keeping key details quiet, including the truck’s range, charging speed, and final motor setup.

That mystery matters because Ford will not be launching into a quiet market. Tesla, Rivian, General Motors, and Stellantis are already in the mix, and the pressure does not stop there. Newer names like Slate, Telo, and Scout Motors are also lining up their own electric trucks, which makes Ford’s timing both bold and risky.

Slate may be the most immediate threat, especially with a $25,000 pickup expected before the end of 2026. Telo’s MT1 is also moving toward production, with a price near $41,000 and a compact footprint that could appeal to buyers who want something smaller than a full-size truck. Scout is shaping up as a different kind of challenger, with a larger body-on-frame pickup and premium pricing expected in 2027.

Ford clearly wants this truck to land as more than a budget EV with a clever wrap. The company is betting that a lower price, a practical size, and a familiar truck image can carve out space in a crowded market. If the Unicorn tease is any hint, Ford plans to keep the spotlight on this one right up until the real thing finally rolls out.
