Gen Z Embraces Entrepreneurship, Launches Side Hustles Now

I argue that promoting entrepreneurship and high achievement is not greed, it is patriotism; I push back against the comfortable appeal of socialism among young Americans; I explain why Abraham Maslow’s idea of “synergy.” matters for builders and innovators; and I call on conservatives and free-market advocates to speak to Gen Z in a way that invites them to lead rather than to surrender to the state.

This is nothing less than a frontal assault on the human spirit when we tell people to aim low or to distrust success. America became the most prosperous and opportunity-rich country because ambition was encouraged, not shamed. Entrepreneurs did not loot the system, they lifted it.

The core of entrepreneurship is simple and moral: improving your life by improving the lives of others. Founders and small business owners turn ideas into products and services that make daily life better for millions. That process creates jobs, wealth and communities that flourish.

Science gives us a vocabulary for what many entrepreneurs feel in practice. Abraham Maslow argued that people can reach a state he called “synergy.” when selfish drives merge with a desire to contribute, producing far more than either impulse alone. In the American context, that mixture explains how tinkerers turned into titans while lifting countless neighborhoods along the way.

We should be frank about the stakes: fewer people chasing big goals hurts everyone. If ambition is stigmatized, potential founders stay home, innovations stall and communities miss out on the prosperity that comes from risk-taking. No one benefits from teaching young people that striving for extraordinary success is selfish or illegitimate.

That message matters because youth opinion is shifting in dangerous directions. Roughly 62% of Americans under 30 hold a favorable view of socialism, and politicians who romanticize big government are nudging a whole generation away from self-reliance. When leaders suggest that the state will do better than individuals, they undercut the very instincts that build businesses and jobs.

Still, there is hope: Gen Z shows signs of wanting to build, not just consume. Surveys reveal a growing interest in startups and side hustles, and many young people are already exploring entrepreneurship as a path to independence. The question is whether pro-market voices will meet them with a positive, optimistic story or cede the conversation to those promising safety through state control.

Mocking opponents is easy and unproductive; winning hearts and minds takes conviction and appeal. Conservatives and free-market advocates need to speak directly to the ambition that politicians like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez try to dismiss. Tell young people they can change the world, that aiming high helps others, and that becoming wealthy by creating value is a noble, community-building act.

We must offer concrete confidence, not just criticism, and frame prosperity as a public good created by private initiative. Invite Gen Z into the ranks of creators and risk-takers with mentorship, policy that reduces unnecessary red tape, and a culture that celebrates productive achievement. The future depends on whether the next generation is encouraged to build or told to hand the keys to the state.
