Norovirus Hits Caribbean Princess, CDC Reports 115 Ill

The Caribbean Princess reported a norovirus outbreak during its April 28 to May 11 voyage, with just over 100 passengers and a small number of crew falling ill; the ship and health authorities moved quickly with cleaning, isolation and testing measures while the CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program opened an investigation. The illness produced typical symptoms of norovirus, and Princess Cruises says enhanced sanitizing steps were taken during the trip and a full disinfection will follow upon arrival. Officials emphasize that case counts reflect the whole voyage and do not mean everyone was sick at once.

Health officials recorded 102 of 3,116 passengers as ill, a rate of about 3.3 percent, and 13 of 1,131 crew members, roughly 1.2 percent, with reports of diarrhea and vomiting emerging during the voyage. The outbreak was reported to the CDC on May 7, and the itinerary ran from April 28 through May 11. Those figures mean the passenger count slightly exceeded the CDC’s 3 percent threshold used to flag an outbreak for further attention.

Princess Cruises issued a statement confirming that only a limited number of people experienced mild gastrointestinal illness on the April 28 Caribbean Princess departure from Port Everglades. “Princess Cruises can confirm that a limited number of individuals reported mild gastrointestinal illness during the April 28 Caribbean Princess voyage from Port Everglades,” the line said. The company also described stepped-up sanitation measures taken while the ship was underway.

“We quickly disinfected every area of the ship and added extra sanitizing throughout the voyage. Upon arrival to Port Canaveral on May 11, Caribbean Princess will undergo comprehensive cleaning and disinfection before departing for her next voyage,” the statement continued. Those actions included isolating ill passengers and crew and collecting stool specimens for testing to identify the cause and limit spread. The carrier reported following its outbreak response plan and consulting with the CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program as cases were tracked.

The CDC confirmed that the Vessel Sanitation Program launched a field response to assist with control measures, including an environmental assessment and an outbreak investigation. Investigators typically look at food handling, water systems, cleaning protocols and patterns of illness to determine how transmission occurred and what additional steps will prevent recurrence. The goal of that work is to find weak points and recommend targeted fixes so future sailings are safer.

Industry observers note that norovirus is a frequent cause of short, intense gastrointestinal illness across settings, and cruise-related cases are a small slice of the total national burden. Stewart Chiron, a Miami-based cruise industry expert known as “The Cruise Guy,” pointed out that many outbreaks begin when an infected passenger boards and unwittingly spreads the virus. He also emphasized that cruise operators follow strict sanitation protocols and isolate sick travelers quickly to reduce transmission aboard ship.

Norovirus spreads easily, often by contaminated surfaces, person-to-person contact and occasionally through food or water, which is why rapid disinfection and isolation are core responses. Ships increase cleaning frequency, use disinfectants effective against norovirus, and instruct crew on enhanced hand hygiene as part of their outbreak plans. Passengers are typically advised to wash hands thoroughly and report symptoms early so they can be cared for and sequestered if needed.

Officials stress that reported case totals reflect illnesses that occurred at any point during the entire voyage and do not imply everyone was sick simultaneously. The Caribbean Princess is scheduled to undergo a comprehensive cleaning before its next departure, and the CDC will continue its review to confirm containment and help prevent future incidents. Passengers and crew affected during the trip received care and the incident serves as a reminder of the contagious nature of norovirus on shared vessels.
