John Payne, a 90-year-old golfer, has just celebrated an incredible golfing achievement. Right after his 90th birthday, he managed to hit his first-ever hole-in-one. This happened on July 18 at a golf course in the U.K., where Payne has been playing for 30 years, despite his eyesight not being as sharp as it once was.
Payne struck the ball with his driver on the sixth hole, a challenging 200-yard par three. The ball bounced off the slope of a bunker and rolled straight into the cup. “When I was told I’d hit the perfect shot, I felt magic,” Payne shared, describing the experience as a “once-in-a-lifetime shot.”
For three decades, Payne had been swinging his clubs at the same course without scoring an ace. He mentioned, “Some people have never had one in their life and I can see why.” His poor eyesight meant he didn’t see the ball drop into the hole, but his fellow golfers provided a play-by-play as it happened.
Payne took up golf in his 60s, following retirement from a management career. He plays regularly with a group of eight friends, enjoying the camaraderie and the game. “When you’ve come to the end of your working life, you want to keep busy,” he reflected. “You want to be out and not cooped up.”
Despite holding a handicap of about 26, Payne no longer competes in official tournaments, joking, “I’m getting too long in the tooth for that.” Outside of golf, he keeps active by going to the gym twice a week, which he says helps maintain his joint mobility and golf swing. “Golf is important, but the gym is important for the movement side of things,” he noted.
His extraordinary hole-in-one was celebrated with his large family, including 16 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Gurj Bowbanks, operations manager at the golf course, expressed the club’s excitement for him, saying, “I think we are all in awe of him, and he’s put us all to shame.”
