Fitness experts have a range of views on how long people should be able to hold a plank, usually anywhere from 20 seconds to two minutes, depending on their age. But an 80-year-old man from Florida, Bob Schwartz, has set a whole new standard by holding a plank for an astonishing 50 minutes. This incredible feat took place at the Ocean Reef Fitness Club in Key Largo, leaving many in awe and earning Schwartz the nickname “The Plankster.”

Luis Bracamonte, the director of fitness and wellness at the club, was there to witness this remarkable achievement. “To our knowledge, after extensive searching, it is the longest plank ever held by an 80-year-old,” Bracamonte shared with Fox News Digital. He praised Schwartz as a “super-ager,” highlighting his extraordinary fitness level.

A plank is more than just an abdominal move; it’s an isometric exercise that demands holding a push-up position for a set time. It works various muscles, including the arms, legs, chest, and back, making it a comprehensive workout. Schwartz’s planking journey took off when Bracamonte organized a contest in 2016, offering a free smoothie to anyone who could plank for four minutes. Schwartz not only earned his smoothie but also won the contest by planking for over 10 minutes.

Before the contest, Schwartz admitted that a minute was probably his maximum planking time, though he had a decent core strength by then. As he pushed his limits, he discovered that his times were surpassing records for his age group, with the over-80 record being 15 minutes and the over-70 record at 38 minutes. While Guinness World Records doesn’t officially recognize age-based records, Schwartz has taken to the internet to share his achievements.

“The hardest part is just making the commitment to exercise, and staying with it long enough for it to become a habit,” Schwartz noted. His passion for planking has even influenced his family, with his youngest grandson, age 7, joining him in plank challenges. For Schwartz, planking is an efficient way to engage almost every major muscle group in his body and can be done at home without any equipment.

Interestingly, Schwartz wasn’t always a fitness enthusiast. He only started going to the gym at age 62, driven by a need to alleviate chronic back pain. Since embracing core exercises, Schwartz claims he hasn’t experienced any back issues. His fitness routine includes a mix of core exercises, cycle classes, and strength training, alongside a daily three-mile walk.

Nutrition plays a role in Schwartz’s lifestyle as well. He sticks to a “healthy-ish” diet, ensuring he consumes fruits, vegetables, fish, and lean meats while minimizing sugar and alcohol. His consistent habits have allowed him to maintain a stable weight and blood pressure, free of medications.

Back in 2017, Schwartz’s planking prowess became well-known at the Ocean Reef Fitness Club when he took on the manager in a plank contest. Adopting the persona of “The Plankster,” Schwartz won the challenge, further cementing his legendary status. He advises those new to planking and fitness to consult a trainer to learn proper form and avoid injuries.

Maintaining balance is something Schwartz emphasizes, especially for older individuals. He suggests simple exercises like lifting one foot while standing in line to prevent falls, which can be particularly harmful at an advanced age. Schwartz continues to engage in various activities, recognizing the importance of strength and agility.

Looking ahead, Schwartz plans to maintain his fitness level for as long as possible, enjoying the activities that require strength and agility. He humorously notes that until a “magic exercise pill” is invented, he’ll keep hitting the gym. The story of Bob Schwartz is an inspiring reminder of the power of consistency and commitment to fitness at any age.
