5 Family Pickup Trucks Outscore The Chevrolet Silverado 1500

The Silverado still has plenty going for it, but a handful of pickup trucks are landing stronger scores in key reviews and owner ratings. Some are cheaper, some are more family-friendly, and a few bring a lot more punch or efficiency to the table. That mix makes the competition a lot tougher than it looks at first glance.

The 2026 Chevy Colorado is the first truck that makes the Silverado sweat. It carries a lower starting price and still manages to edge out its bigger sibling in several ratings, especially with owners and some major review outlets.

The Colorado’s standard 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder delivers 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic. It also gives buyers the choice between rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive, while towing capacity tops out at 7,700 pounds. That makes it a smart, compact-ish option for families who want utility without jumping straight into full-size territory.

The 2026 Ford F-150 remains one of the most obvious rivals to beat, and it does exactly that in a lot of testing. Reviewers routinely rank it above the Silverado, with stronger scores from MotorTrend, U.S. News, and Car and Driver.

Ford gives the F-150 a broad engine lineup, including a 2.7-liter V6, a 3.5-liter V6, a hybrid 3.5-liter V6, and a 5.0-liter V8. Every version uses a 10-speed automatic, and buyers can choose rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, which keeps the truck flexible for everything from school runs to hauling weekend gear.

The 2026 Ram 1500 also puts up a serious fight and often comes out ahead of the Silverado in expert testing. Car and Driver went all the way to a perfect 10, while MotorTrend and U.S. News also gave Ram the edge.

Ram’s return of the 5.7-liter V8 HEMI adds more appeal, even if the truck’s strongest suit is still its overall balance rather than brute-force bragging rights. With a max towing rating of 11,610 pounds and payload capacity up to 2,360 pounds, it has enough muscle for family life without feeling overly rough around the edges.

Then there’s the 2026 Ford Maverick, which keeps proving that smaller can be smarter. It earns stronger marks than the Silverado from Car and Driver, MotorTrend, and U.S. News, while matching it in JD Power consumer ratings.

The Maverick leans into practicality with two very different powertrains, including a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 250 hp and a hybrid setup that pairs a 2.5-liter engine with an electric motor for 191 hp. It starts well below the Silverado too, which makes it especially appealing for buyers who want an easygoing daily driver that can still handle family chores and light work.

The 2026 Rivian R1T is the wild card in the group, but the reviews make it impossible to ignore. It beats the Silverado in Car and Driver, MotorTrend, and U.S. News testing, even if JD Power consumer scores favor Chevy by a bit.

What really sets the R1T apart is that it is fully electric and seriously quick. Depending on the setup, it can make 533 hp, 665 hp, 850 hp, or as much as 1,025 hp from a quad-motor system, which puts it in a totally different conversation from a conventional pickup.

That leaves the Silverado in a familiar position: still strong, still respected, but no longer the automatic answer for every family. The Colorado keeps things affordable, the F-150 brings scale and versatility, the Ram 1500 nails the comfort-and-capability sweet spot, the Maverick keeps prices grounded, and the R1T throws down futuristic performance that turns heads fast. For shoppers comparing badges, ratings, and real-world usefulness, the field is crowded in the best possible way.
