A V12 engine brings instant prestige, silky power delivery, and a kind of mechanical theater that few other setups can touch. But that glamour comes with tradeoffs that show up fast once you start looking past the badge, especially in cars built around luxury, performance, or both.
One of the biggest challenges is simple, old-school complexity. A V12 is basically two inline-sixes sharing a crankshaft, which helps explain why it can be so smooth, but it also means double the parts, double the packaging headaches, and double the chances for something to become awkward or expensive.
That complexity turns into a real-world problem when you open the hood and try to work on one. In many cars, the engine bay is packed so tightly that routine jobs become a battle, and access to plugs, coils, belts, and accessories can be a nightmare.
Even basic maintenance tends to cost more because there is simply more engine to service. More cylinders means more spark plugs, more ignition components, more sensors, more fluids, and more labor time, which adds up quickly whether the car is old, rare, or still under modern ownership.
Then there is the physical size of the engine itself, which can make fitment a huge issue. Automakers often need long front ends, unusual hood designs, or very specific chassis layouts just to make a V12 work without sacrificing everything else around it.
That is why some V12 cars feel like they were designed around the engine first and the rest of the vehicle second. In cramped layouts, even a straightforward repair can turn into a major teardown, and that is before you get into timing work or anything buried deep in the bay.
For some owners, the smoothness is worth it. For others, the problem is that the car may drive beautifully but punish you every time it needs attention, especially if it was never built with easy service in mind.
The financial side can be just as rough. V12s are rarely cheap to maintain, and the market often reflects that reality by making the cars themselves seem like bargains while the repair bills quietly wait around the corner.
That is especially true with niche or older models, where finding a mechanic who knows the platform can be hard. A lot of V12 cars were sold in small numbers, so even if the engine itself is strong, the support network around it can be thin.
Fuel economy is another obvious weak spot. A twelve-cylinder engine burns a lot of gas by nature, and most V12 vehicles are also heavy, luxurious, and loaded with equipment that keeps them from ever feeling efficient.
There are ways automakers could try to tame that thirst, but they usually come with their own downsides. Cylinder shutoff, hybrid help, and other tricks can help on paper, yet they can also add complexity and chip away at the smooth, effortless character that makes a V12 special in the first place.
That leaves buyers in a pretty predictable spot. If you want the experience, you are signing up for the maintenance, the packaging compromises, and the fuel stops that come with it, because a V12 is never really trying to be sensible.
Still, that is part of the appeal. These engines exist to make a statement, and they do it with a level of drama that can make all the drawbacks feel strangely acceptable, right up until the next service reminder starts blinking back at you.
