15-Year-Old Girl Identified as Shooter in Wisconsin School Tragedy

A 15-year-old student has been identified as the shooter responsible for a deadly attack on Monday at Abundant Life Christian School, a K-12 private school in Madison, Wisconsin. The incident left a teacher and a student dead, two other students critically injured, and several others wounded.

Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes confirmed the shooter as Natalie “Samantha” Rupnow, a student at the school. Authorities reported that Rupnow entered the school armed with a handgun around 11 a.m., opening fire in a classroom during a study hall.

The attack began swiftly, and the first 911 call came from a second-grade student in a nearby classroom. “Every child, every person in that building is a victim and will be a victim forever. … We need to figure out and try to piece together what exactly happened,” Chief Barnes said during a press conference Monday night.

Police arrived at the scene within three minutes of the emergency call, a response time that Barnes credited with helping contain the tragic situation.

By the time authorities arrived, one teacher and one student had already been pronounced dead. Another teacher and five students sustained injuries, with two students still in critical condition as of Monday evening.

Rupnow, the shooter, reportedly turned the gun on herself after the attack. She sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was pronounced dead while being transported to the hospital.

The investigation is now focused on uncovering Rupnow’s motive. Reports have surfaced about a possible manifesto allegedly authored by Rupnow circulating online. However, Chief Barnes clarified that law enforcement has yet to confirm its authenticity.

“We haven’t been able to verify that it’s authentic. We’re certainly aware that it’s been posted,” Barnes said, adding that the Madison Police Department is working closely with the FBI to analyze the document.

SWAT teams also conducted a search of Rupnow’s family home, located about eight miles from the school. Investigators are interviewing her father and examining personal items to determine what may have led to the attack. At this time, Barnes noted, there is no evidence suggesting that Rupnow’s parents were involved in any wrongdoing.

Despite the horror, students and staff reportedly stayed calm and followed safety protocols. Barbara Wiers, a school official, commended the students for their behavior during the shooting. “They handled themselves magnificently,” she said.

Chief Barnes echoed that sentiment, sharing that a second-grade student made an immediate 911 call as the situation began unfolding. “It’s remarkable, but also heartbreaking,” Barnes added.

Following the attack, speculation about Rupnow’s gender identity surfaced on social media. When asked about the matter, Chief Barnes dismissed it as irrelevant to the ongoing investigation.

“Whether or not she was, he was, they were transgender is something that may come out later, but for what we’re doing right now, today, literally eight hours after a mass shooting in a school in Madison, it is of no consequence at this time,” Barnes said.

The tragedy has drawn national attention and renewed calls for gun control legislation. President Joe Biden addressed the shooting in a statement Monday night, expressing sorrow while demanding action to curb gun violence.

“From Newtown to Uvalde, Parkland to Madison, to so many other shootings that don’t receive attention – it is unacceptable that we are unable to protect our children from this scourge of gun violence,” Biden said.

“Every child deserves to feel safe in their classroom. Students across our country should be learning how to read and write – not having to learn how to duck and cover.”
