Wisconsin Brewer Celebrates Violence, Threatens Free Beer For Trump

Minocqua Brewing owner Kirk Bangstad has been at the center of a fierce controversy after a string of social posts that celebrated violence against conservative figures, including remarks tied to President Trump. His rhetoric drew fresh condemnation from Wisconsin Democrats only after another public incident, even though his behavior had drawn law enforcement attention earlier. The fallout mixes political outrage, past legal troubles, and pointed calls for accountability from both sides.

Kirk Bangstad runs a brewery in Wisconsin and serves as treasurer of a federal super PAC with the same name, yet his online persona has become the real headline. He has posted messages that many viewed as celebrating political violence and aimed at conservative targets, drawing alarm across the state. The tone of those posts pushed the story from local gossip into full political controversy.

Bangstad rushed, for instance, to state, “F**k Charlie Kirk,” immediately after the Turning Point USA founder’s assassination at Utah Valley University, then wrote weeks later, “May his soul never find peace.” He also promised supporters a reward for such violence, vowing to give fellow travelers “free beer, all day long, the day he dies.” Those messages made plain where his sympathies — and his rhetoric — were headed.

His history compounds the problem. Bangstad is a twice-failed Democratic political candidate who faced a steep defamation judgment in 2023 and was charged with harassment last year. He has circulated provocative materials and called openly for radical changes in the system, which only increased scrutiny from critics and authorities. Those earlier actions made his recent posts feel like part of a pattern, not an isolated outburst.

In one post that seemed to set a countdown, he dared followers to hold him to his word: “Show us this post when it happens in a few months and we’ll make good on that promise.” That line suggested a certainty about an act of violence that alarmed neighbors and officials. Even without explicit names in some posts, his follow-up commentary clarified who he meant.

The U.S. Secret Service has previously told reporters that Bangstad’s content was on the agency’s radar, which added a layer of seriousness to the online trash talk. That attention shifted the debate from tasteless commentary to potential threats and public safety concerns. When agencies start taking note, the political theater quickly becomes a security question.

Well, we almost got #freebeerday. Either a brother or sister in the Resistance needs to work on their marksmanship or he faked another assassination to get a a [sic] positive news cycle. We’ll never know. Regardless, we stand at the ready to pour free beer the day it happens.

Wisconsin Democrats were largely quiet about his earlier posts, but they spoke up after his latest message. A spokesman said the brewer’s “rhetoric is completely unacceptable and should be retracted immediately.” That rebuke came only after broader attention and growing outrage over repeated incendiary statements.

Former Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes weighed in: “I denounce those who had any reaction to last night’s shooting other than outrage at the state of political violence in our country,” he said. “It’s completely unacceptable, and I am thankful for the actions of law enforcement who acted swiftly and bravely to keep everyone safe.” Those words aim to put distance between mainstream Democrats and radical fringes.

A campaign spokeswoman for Democratic state Rep. Francesca Hong called Bangstad’s post “is intentionally inflammatory and a symptom of the normalization of political violence.” Another candidate, Missy Hughes, said, “Such vile rhetoric is completely unacceptable and must be universally condemned.” Even some on the left wanted no part of celebrating threats or chaos.

Rebecca Cooke, who once worked with Bangstad, added a sharp rebuke: “This rhetoric is dangerous and unacceptable — showcasing just how broken our political system is.” That kind of criticism from a former associate hit harder than outsider commentary. It suggested his own circle had concluded his behavior crossed the line.

Bangstad pushed back, at times mocking Democratic leaders for condemning him and accusing them of being politically naïve. “Leave it to the Corporate Dems and politically naive Democratic gubernatorial candidates to take the bait and condemn ‘political violence’ or ‘politically violent rhetoric’ after the 3rd questionably/arguable fake assassination attempt against Trump,” he wrote. He also tried to frame reporting about the incidents as staged or exaggerated.

He later doubled down with another inflammatory post: “The day ‘he’ dies will do a LOT to end that suffering. Sure, JD Vance will bring with him a more intelligent treachery to the world stage if Trump passes — but when the symbol of American weakness, ignorance, and bigotry finally breathes his last breath — the entire world will be able to breathe a little easier.” Those words have kept the controversy alive and forced local party leaders to respond.

The episode shows how extreme rhetoric can spiral into a public safety issue and a political headache, especially when it comes from someone once involved in electoral politics. Officials and voters are left to decide how to hold people accountable while protecting free speech and public safety.
