Getting enough sleep is crucial for good health, but many people find it challenging to achieve quality rest. According to a U.S. News survey released in March, a significant number of Americans shared insights into their sleeping patterns. Although the National Institutes of Health suggests that adults should aim for seven to nine hours of sleep per night, 58% of the participants admitted they only manage six to seven hours.

Surprisingly, one in five Americans confessed to getting merely four to five hours of sleep. The survey also highlighted that a quarter of the respondents rely on over-the-counter or prescription sleep aids. Furthermore, a staggering 89% of U.S. adults reported experiencing regular interruptions during their sleep.

Sleep expert Wendy Troxel, a senior behavioral specialist with the RAND Corporation, offered some explanations for these sleep disruptions. She pointed out that the stress and unpredictability of modern life significantly contribute to this issue. Other health-related factors, such as chronic pain or sleep disorders like sleep apnea and insomnia, are also culprits behind restless nights.

Environmental elements, including pollution and rising global temperatures, can further disrupt sleep by affecting the body’s circadian rhythm. Troxel explained that the body’s core temperature naturally drops at night, signaling it’s time to sleep. A cooler sleeping environment can facilitate this temperature drop, promoting deeper, more restful sleep.

Experts recommend keeping the bedroom temperature between 65 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit for optimal sleep. Troxel suggests using breathable bedding, lightweight sleepwear, and possibly fans or air conditioning to maintain this ideal temperature. Investing in temperature-regulating mattresses or mattress pads can also help.

Menopause is another significant factor affecting sleep, with about 60% of women experiencing restless nights during this transition. Hormonal changes throughout the menstrual cycle and menopause can disrupt sleep patterns by influencing the body’s thermoregulation.

To tackle these nighttime awakenings, Troxel advised adopting a strategy known as stimulus control. If you find yourself unable to fall back asleep, it can be helpful to get out of bed and engage in a calming activity, like reading or gentle stretching. This approach can break the cycle of frustration and wakefulness associated with being in bed.

Troxel emphasized the importance of viewing your bed as a sanctuary for sleep, rather than a place of stress and worry. She also cautioned against checking the clock in the middle of the night, as seeing the time can amplify anxiety and stress.
