Walz Launches Small Town PAC, Faces Allegations While Attacking Vance

Tim Walz has rolled out a new Small Town PAC and used the announcement to take a swipe at Vice President JD Vance, pitching Democrats as the real champions of rural America while casting Republicans as the problem. The move lands amid lingering controversies in Minnesota and raises questions about whether Walz is campaigning for voters or for headlines.

Walz said the Small Town PAC is meant to boost Democratic campaigns in rural areas, framing it as a fix for places he says have been abandoned. The pitch reads like a straightforward outreach plan, but the tone was pointed and political from the start. He doubled down on the idea that Democrats need to “show up” where others have not, using that line as the centerpiece of the announcement.

‘If Democrats want to win in more places, we’ve got to start showing up in more places.’ That line was repeated as a rallying cry, quoted by Walz during his rollout and used to define what he calls a renewed focus on small towns. It’s a tidy slogan, but slogans don’t erase local controversies or explain past political choices.

“Republicans like JD Vance like to portray their small-town neighbors as petty, resentful, and small-minded. I disagree. I think the problem facing small towns are Republicans like JD Vance,” said Walz to Politico, and that sentence became the centerpiece of his criticism. The attack aims to recast Vance as the real obstacle to rural prosperity, not the champion he presents himself as. From a Republican perspective, the line reads as political theater — a way to deflect from concrete policy disagreements by casting opponents as caricatures.

Walz has a track record that critics will point to when assessing his credibility on rural issues, including public accusations that affected his political standing. He gave up hopes of re-election amid allegations tied to fraud in parts of the Somali community in Minnesota, claims he has denied. Those episodes will follow his Small Town PAC message and will be used by opponents to question whether Walz is focusing on people or optics.

“We’re going to show up in small towns, organize in places too many people have given up on, and build power with the folks who call these places home,” Walz on social media Monday. The rhetoric tries to position Democrats as relaunching a grassroots effort, but voters who prefer clear policies over campaign lines will want specifics. The promise to “build power” may thrill activists, but it won’t satisfy skeptics who want tangible plans for jobs, schools, and public safety.

He Politico that he was going use the super PAC to seek “some teachers, some nurses, some laborers, vets, and young people in small towns across the country who can represent their communities better than Silicon Valley can.” That roster sounds appealing until you ask what policies will actually improve life in those towns. Republicans will argue that economic growth, deregulation, and support for law enforcement are the practical answers, not messaging campaigns.

Walz’s recent rhetoric has been dramatic, and it has not won him universal praise even among critics. He warned that Minnesota was “at war” with the federal government after a federal enforcement surge, language that ratcheted up tensions in an already fraught moment. “I’ve issued a warning order to prepare the Minnesota National Guard,” he said, “We have soldiers in training and prepared to be deployed if necessary. I remind you, a warning order is a heads-up for folks.”

That episode culminated with the federal operation ending after violent incidents and a negotiated pullback, which added another layer to a complicated local narrative. For voters wary of overreach and chaos, the image of a governor readying the National Guard looks less like leadership and more like political theater. Republicans will point to the outcome as evidence that tough talk and dramatic posturing do not necessarily solve on-the-ground problems.

The Small Town PAC announcement is a clear attempt to seize the rural narrative, but politics in small communities tends to reward concrete results over campaign slogans. If Walz and his allies want to persuade skeptical voters, they will need to move beyond sound bites and show measurable progress on jobs, cost of living, and public safety. Until then, critics on the right will treat the PAC as another partisan play rather than a genuine plan for rural revival.
