The arrest of Ah’lijah Aman Mah’di Balk, a thief who ran over a Port Orange police officer while attempting to flee in a stolen car, has caused a stir among authorities.
The 20-year-old was parked at an apartment complex when officers approached him, triggering a violent reaction from Balk as he sought to escape.
In his attempt to evade the authorities, Balk put the stolen car in reverse and recklessly ran over one of the officers.
As he fled, he collided with multiple police cars before eventually losing control of the vehicle and continuing his escape on foot.
However, officers managed to track him down and apprehend him after a pursuit.
Footage from body-worn cameras captured a tense standoff between Balk and an officer who appeared to be aiming either a taser or a firearm at him after cornering him.
Despite the officer’s commands for Balk to raise his hands in surrender, he defiantly disregarded them and even knocked down an officer before fleeing on foot.
The video then shows the officer subduing Balk and ultimately leading to his arrest.
Balk now faces an array of serious charges including aggravated battery and assault on an officer, fleeing from law enforcement, grand theft of a motor vehicle, resisting arrest with violence, petit theft, criminal mischief, and unlawful possession of another person’s identification.
His extensive list of criminal charges reflects the severity of his actions during the incident.
As a result of these charges, Balk is currently being held without bond at the Volusia County Branch Jail.
It is clear that given the gravity of his offenses, authorities are taking firm measures to ensure that he remains in custody pending further legal proceedings.
