USDA Confirms New World Screwworm In South Texas Calf

The return of New World screwworm to South Texas has triggered immediate USDA testing, local containment measures, and renewed focus on sterile fly production to protect cattle and supply chains. This article walks through the detection, what the parasite does, official assurances, the historical fight against screwworm, and the response plans now in motion.

Federal and state officials are responding after a potential case surfaced in South Texas, with on-the-ground monitoring already underway. The U.S. Department of Agriculture a potential South Texas case of New World screwworm and confirmed a sample was sent for testing at the National Veterinary Services Laboratories in Ames, Iowa. Authorities say they are coordinating closely with local partners while awaiting final lab results.

‘These eggs hatch into dangerous parasitic larvae, or maggots, which burrow or “screw” into flesh with sharp mouth hooks.’

The New World screwworm fly is a pest whose larvae consume living tissue of warm-blooded animals, making wounds far worse and complicating animal care. The fly itself is about the size of a common house fly, but the damage it causes can be catastrophic for individual animals and costly for producers. Its lifecycle focuses on laying eggs in open wounds or body orifices where larvae can thrive.

Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins announced that laboratory testing confirmed the detection and said it was found in a “3 week old bovine in Zavala County, Texas.” That confirmation has focused resources on containment, tracing movements, and treating any exposed animals. Officials emphasize rapid identification and treatment to prevent further spread.

In another , Rollins assured the public that “our food supply is 100% safe. This potential New World Screwworm detection is being fully contained and is not a harm to the American food supply or consumer safety.” Her statement aims to calm consumer concerns while underlining a containment posture. State and federal agencies are stressing that current measures are about protecting animal health and sustaining market confidence.

Rollins also noted that “All models showed NWS coming to the U.S. last summer/early fall — so a big thank you to our partners across the industry and local, state and the entire Trump administration for unprecedented action that gave us almost an extra year to prepare for this moment.” That preparation included planning for surveillance, response teams, and ramping sterile fly production. Officials say those investments improve the odds of quashing local outbreaks before they spread.

The screwworm prefers warm, humid conditions, which makes a national outbreak less likely but leaves southern cattle operations at greater risk. Any local infestation can still inflict heavy losses, especially if it hits young or injured animals that are more vulnerable to infestation. Producers are being urged to inspect and treat wounds promptly and to report suspicious cases immediately.

The U.S. cattle herd sits at historically low levels, a factor that can magnify market impacts if supply is disrupted. With the national herd at roughly 86.2 million head, industry watchers note that even small supply shocks can feed into higher retail prices and tighter availability. That economic backdrop makes containment not just an animal-health priority but an economic one too.

Rollins all farmers to follow movement restrictions and treatment guidance provided by the Texas Animal Health Commission. The state agency has been preparing for resurgent cases after observing northward progression of screwworm from Central America in 2023. Local restrictions, rapid treatment protocols, and coordinated surveillance are central to the containment playbook.

Historically, the United States declared itself free of indigenous screwworm in the 1960s after aggressive control programs, but outbreaks have occurred before and required major campaigns to push the pest south. The most effective tool has been the mass release of sterile flies, which are irradiated to prevent reproduction and then released to collapse wild populations. That technique remains the cornerstone of national response plans.

To bolster domestic capacity, a sterile fly production facility broke ground in Texas this year, designed to produce an initial 100 million sterile flies per week and scale to 300 million per week over time. Having the ability to release sterilized flies quickly in affected zones shortens response time and reduces reliance on overseas production. Officials say this domestic capability strengthens long-term preparedness against future incursions.

For now, agencies stress vigilance, quick reporting, and strict adherence to movement controls to contain this detection. Veterinarians and producers are being asked to treat wounds, inspect animals frequently, and follow official guidance to limit spread. The response is active and layered, blending testing, treatment, and sterile fly strategies to protect animals, ranchers, and the broader supply chain.
