Charlotte, North Carolina, is all set to host the 2027 Military World Games, marking a significant moment as the United States welcomes this event for the first time. The last time these games occurred was in Wuhan, China, back in October 2019, right before the COVID-19 pandemic altered the world stage. The 2027 games will take place amid other major events in the U.S., such as the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
President Donald Trump will oversee these events and has been credited for bringing the World Cup and the Olympics to American soil during his first term. However, it’s his Defense Secretary, Pete Hegseth, who played a crucial role in getting the Military World Games approved for North Carolina. According to Eli Bremer, the event’s co-chair, Hegseth’s vision aligns with the U.S. military’s engagement in elite sports.
Bremer, who served as a major in the Air Force Reserves and competed in the 2008 Olympics, believes these games can help foster understanding among nations. Reflecting on his past experiences, Bremer shared how interacting with athletes from countries like Iran and North Korea helped create a more human connection. The games are organized by the International Military Sports Council (CISM), which ranks as the world’s second-largest multi-discipline sports organization, right after the International Olympic Committee.
CISM President Nilton Romil from Brazil shared that bringing the games to the U.S. was not without challenges. Yet, the committee was determined to overcome the hurdles, emphasizing the symbolic importance of promoting global peace. Romil pointed out that hosting such a large-scale international event in the U.S. for the first time required navigating various complexities.
The significance of hosting these games in America is historic. The U.S. has long been a supporter of CISM’s mission, and now, by hosting the games, it sends a strong message of commitment to global peace and unity. Previously, three of the last four Military World Games were held in BRICS nations, with China, Brazil, and India hosting the events. Chad Senior, a former U.S. Olympian and veteran of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, expressed his thoughts on the games arriving during a time when the U.S. military seems more divided. He noted the changing policies in the current administration and the polarized opinions they evoke. Senior highlighted that these games offer an opportunity for militaries to come together in a friendly environment, which he views as a positive.
Former U.S. Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell, who also competed in the Olympics and served in the Air Force, welcomed the choice of Charlotte for the upcoming games. Campbell reflected on the discipline required to excel both as an athlete and a member of the military, seeing competition as a means to elevate performance.
