Pastor Ezra Jin walked out of a Chinese prison with a message that landed hard: faith should never be a crime. His case put a spotlight on a much bigger reality in China, where worship only stays safe if it bows to the Chinese Communist Party. That pressure has not stayed locked inside China’s borders, and that is what makes the issue so urgent.
Jin’s Zion Church in Beijing was an independent house church, the kind Beijing sees as a threat because it is not under state control. That same playbook has been used against a wide range of believers and spiritual groups, from underground Christians to Falun Gong practitioners and Tibetan Buddhists. The message from the regime is plain: submit, disappear, or suffer the consequences.
The crackdown reaches deep. Catholic leaders have faced detention, harassment, and official punishment for refusing to follow the CCP line, while respected figures like Cardinal Joseph Zen have been targeted for standing apart from the party’s demands. The case of the Panchen Lama remains one of the starkest examples of that control, with the spiritual leader taken as a child and still missing decades later.
What is happening in China is not just about isolated arrests. It is a system built to keep religion on a leash, with the state deciding which voices may speak and which communities may exist. That runs straight against basic human dignity and the idea that belief is a matter of conscience, not government permission.
And then there is the part that makes the problem feel even bigger: the repression does not stop at the border. Chinese authorities have been accused of harassment, surveillance, and intimidation aimed at dissidents living in the United States, including religious minorities who thought they had found safety here. That kind of reach turns a domestic crackdown into a global threat.
Beijing’s tactics have included disinformation, legal pressure, and the use of technology to watch and track critics overseas. Reports about secret police activity and online surveillance efforts show how serious the campaign has become. For people targeted by the CCP, leaving China does not always mean escaping China.
That is why the coming meeting between Trump and Xi matters so much. A president willing to put China’s religious repression on the table sends a message that trade and diplomacy cannot be separated from basic rights. Cheap goods are not worth pretending that abuse is normal or acceptable.
Trump has already shown a willingness to push back on Beijing, and that leverage should not be wasted. When a regime treats worship as a political problem, it is not asking for respect, it is demanding silence. America should not help bankroll that system by looking the other way.
Freedom of belief is not some side issue reserved for diplomats and think tanks. It goes to the heart of what kind of world gets defended when power is tested. Xi should hear, clearly and directly, that believers cannot be hunted at home, threatened abroad, and still expect business as usual.
