Trump Sends Incredible Message to Charlie Kirk With Engraving on Medal of Freedom
President Donald Trump placed a clear, faith-forward message on the back of the Presidential Medal of Freedom: Charlie Kirk’s name alongside a Christian cross. It was a moment meant to honor a friend, a movement, and the faith that shaped both.
In the Rose Garden ceremony the president presented the medal posthumously to Erika Kirk, marking a public recognition of Charlie’s work and life. Kirk would have turned 32 on that day after being killed by an assassin on the campus of Utah Valley University on September 10. The tone was solemn, personal, and unapologetically sincere.
Speaking to Fox News’ Jesse Watters, Benny Johnson — a longtime friend of the late Turning Point USA founder — said Trump understood “the power that Charlie Kirk brought to the advancement of the Kingdom of Christ, because Erika Kirk showed me something remarkable at the White House right before coming over here to do your show.” His remark framed the engraving as more than symbolism.
Johnson shared what Erika had revealed about the medal itself. “She opened up the medal of freedom….and then she turned it around back, and what you can see here on the back is the first Christian cross…ever engraved on to a Medal of Freedom given by the president,” Johnson said.
“This is a historic moment. The first time that religious iconography has ever made it on to this award,” he added. “And it is done in honor of Charlie Kirk. And what Erika told me was that this is for the advancement of what Charlie Kirk and his work are for the Kingdom of Christ. And the president understood that so profoundly that he gave him this great honor.”
The host noted that since Kirk’s murder, the president has mentioned Heaven more than before, and reminded viewers that Trump himself escaped a close assassination attempt a year earlier when he turned his head at the right moment. That context made the ceremony feel heavier and more reflective.
Doing some research, we couldn’t find any other example of a cross being engraved on the back of a Medal of Freedom, so that is truly incredible.
The White House ceremony was emotional, full of friends and allies remembering Charlie’s energy, faith, and influence on young conservative activists. It was a rare blend of private grief and public recognition.
President Trump explained why he wanted to honor Kirk in this way, laying out his view of Kirk’s impact and sacrifice.
“Charlie was a champion in every way; he didn’t like losing…He was assassinated in the prime of his life for boldly speaking the truth, for living his faith and relentlessly fighting for a better and stronger America,” Trump said. “He loved this country and that’s why it’s my privilege to posthumously award Charles James Kirk, our nation’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.”
When Erika addressed the crowd she spoke about legacy, love, and the small, human things that matter — like birthdays and memories. She told the president that with this honor he had given Charlie something she had tried for years to get right.
“Honestly, President Trump, I have spent 7.5 years trying to find the perfect birthday gift for Charlie…but now I can say with confidence, Mr. President, that you have given him the best birthday gift he could ever have.”
After the ceremony the White House announced October 14, 2025 as a “National Day of Remembrance for Charlie Kirk.”
