A candid phone call between President-elect Donald Trump and former Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz has shed light on the behind-the-scenes dynamics of Gaetz’s short-lived bid to become the next Attorney General. Despite an initial wave of optimism, Gaetz ultimately withdrew from consideration after acknowledging that securing Senate confirmation was unlikely.
According to a report from The Daily Mail, Gaetz had been on a “charm offensive” to secure Senate votes for his confirmation. Early signs appeared promising, with positive feedback from key senators. However, momentum stalled when it became clear that Gaetz did not have the votes needed to overcome confirmation hurdles.
A source close to the process described the challenge:
“At best, this was going to be complicated and drag on into February, March. And a strong A.G. is central to everything Trump wants to get started on from day one … immigration, overhauling the DOJ.”
Trump, aware of the situation, spoke directly with Gaetz. While the president-elect did not push him to step aside, he acknowledged the reality of the Senate dynamics.
“They spoke, and Trump made clear that he couldn’t move the votes in the direction that they needed to move,” a source revealed.
Following the conversation, Gaetz made the decision to withdraw his name from consideration, citing the need to avoid a protracted battle that could distract from Trump’s priorities.
“I had excellent meetings with Senators yesterday. I appreciate their thoughtful feedback – and the incredible support of so many,” Gaetz said in a statement.
“While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition. There is no time to waste on a needlessly protracted Washington scuffle, thus I’ll be withdrawing my name from consideration to serve as Attorney General. Trump’s DOJ must be in place and ready on Day 1.”
Gaetz also reaffirmed his loyalty to Trump and his vision for the administration:
“I remain fully committed to see that Donald J. Trump is the most successful President in history. I will forever be honored that President Trump nominated me to lead the Department of Justice, and I’m certain he will Save America.”
Trump expressed his gratitude for Gaetz’s efforts, emphasizing his respect for the former representative’s decision to step aside.
“I greatly appreciate the recent efforts of Matt Gaetz in seeking approval to be Attorney General,” Trump said. “He was doing very well but, at the same time, did not want to be a distraction for the Administration, for which he has much respect. Matt has a wonderful future, and I look forward to watching all of the great things he will do!”
Vice President-elect JD Vance echoed Trump’s sentiments, calling Gaetz a patriot.
“I’m extremely grateful for the work Matt put into the nomination process. He made his decision to withdraw entirely out of respect for President Trump’s administration. Matt is a patriot, and I look forward to seeing what he does next.”
Just hours after Gaetz’s withdrawal, Trump announced a new nominee for Attorney General: Pam Bondi, the former Attorney General of Florida.
“I am proud to announce former Attorney General of the Great State of Florida, Pam Bondi, as our next Attorney General of the United States,” Trump said in a statement.
Bondi’s credentials include nearly two decades as a prosecutor and a tenure as Florida’s first female Attorney General. During her time in office, she prioritized combating violent crime, fighting drug trafficking, and addressing the opioid crisis.
“She did such an incredible job that I asked her to serve on our Opioid and Drug Abuse Commission during my first term — We saved many lives!” Trump said.
He also emphasized her role in restoring the DOJ’s focus:
“For too long, the partisan Department of Justice has been weaponized against me and other Republicans – Not anymore. Pam will refocus the DOJ to its intended purpose of fighting crime and making America safe again.”
Gaetz’s withdrawal and Bondi’s nomination highlight the critical importance Trump places on the Attorney General role as part of his broader agenda. With Bondi’s nomination likely to face less resistance in the Senate, Trump appears eager to hit the ground running on day one of his administration.
