On Tuesday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced sanctions targeting Seyed Asadoollah Emamjomeh and his corporate network. This move comes as they allegedly attempted to bypass U.S. sanctions by exporting liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from the United States. The decision underscores America’s ongoing efforts to restrict funding to Iran’s destabilizing activities worldwide.

According to Bessent, Emamjomeh’s network aimed to drive revenue for Iran through thousands of LPG shipments. These funds are believed to support Iran’s nuclear ambitions and various militant groups. The Treasury Department’s actions are part of a broader strategy to apply maximum economic pressure on Iran.

A press release from the Treasury Department detailed Emamjomeh’s expansive network. It includes a vessel, the TINOS I, which attempted to load cargo off the coast of Houston, Texas, in 2024. The network’s failure to complete this task highlights the challenges faced in their operations.

Beyond crude oil, LPG remains a significant revenue source for Iran. The proceeds from these exports allegedly support Iran’s nuclear and weapons programs. They also fund proxy groups like Hizballah, the Houthis, and Hamas.

The sanctions are supported by the National Security Presidential Memorandum 2 (NSPM-2). This memorandum is part of the larger campaign to economically pressure Iran. It aims to cut off financial resources that fuel Iran’s aggressive regional activities.

For over a decade, Emamjomeh and his son, Meisam, have managed an LPG sales and delivery network. Their operations span across Iran and the United Arab Emirates. This network has facilitated tens of millions of dollars in business dealings.

Emamjomeh’s UAE-based company, Caspian Petrochemical FZE, plays a crucial role in these activities. They have been exporting shipments from Iran to Pakistan. These efforts are linked to the Persian Gulf Petrochemical Industry Commercial Co. (PGPICC).

In July 2019, OFAC designated PGPICC under Executive Order 13382, a counterproliferation authority. This action was due to PGPICC’s connections to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The IRGC’s engineering arm, Khatam al-Anbiya, received financial support from PGPICC.

The sanctions also mirror previous actions taken under the Trump administration. Four individuals tied to the La Nueva Familia Michoacana (LNFM) were sanctioned. This Mexican cartel has links to fentanyl and human trafficking.

In the current geopolitical climate, these sanctions are a critical tool. They aim to disrupt networks that threaten regional stability. The Treasury Department remains vigilant in its enforcement efforts.

The broader strategy involves cutting off funds that support illicit activities. This includes targeting financial networks and corporate entities. Such measures are essential to safeguarding national security interests.

Sanctions serve as a deterrent to those seeking to evade U.S. laws. They also reinforce the consequences of engaging in prohibited activities. By targeting key figures, the U.S. sends a strong message to adversaries.

The Treasury Department’s actions reflect a commitment to holding violators accountable. This approach is part of a comprehensive plan to counter threats. It ensures that those who seek to undermine U.S. interests face significant repercussions.

The focus remains on dismantling networks that support adversarial regimes. These efforts are crucial in maintaining global peace and security. The Treasury will continue to monitor and act against such threats.

The ongoing economic pressure campaign is a testament to U.S. resolve. It highlights the importance of strategic financial measures. These actions are pivotal in curbing hostile activities and promoting stability.

In the face of these challenges, the U.S. remains steadfast. The Treasury’s sanctions are a crucial component of this strategy. They demonstrate a commitment to defending national and global security interests.
