Texas Teen Arrested In Alleged ISIS Plot Against Rep. Keith Self

Federal investigators have arrested a Texas teenager accused of plotting violence against Rep. Keith Self and allegedly preparing a separate ISIS-linked attack in North Texas. The case has drawn fresh attention to political threats, extremist ideology, and the uneasy reality facing public officials who land on hostile radar.

Authorities say the 17-year-old was taken into custody on Oct. 5 after obtaining a firearm. According to law enforcement sources cited in local reporting, the teen was also believed to be planning an attack tied to ISIS, with Self reportedly singled out as a target at a public event last Saturday.

Self said he was relieved the threat was stopped before anyone was hurt. “I am grateful to the FBI and law enforcement for stopping this threat,” Self said in a statement posted on X.

He added that the situation has not shaken his commitment to the job or to his family. “My family and I are safe, and I remain focused on serving the people of Texas’ 3rd District,” he said. “Preserving our constitutional republic from radical Islam means accepting the costs that come with it—name-calling, threats, and worse.”

The congressman also framed the danger in personal terms, pointing to his military background and the pressures that can come with public service. “Our Founders believed this country was worth the sacrifice,” Self added. “I served 25 years in the military because defending freedom was worth the sacrifice. This only strengthens my resolve. I will not back down.”

Self later spoke with CBS News Texas and said he had limited details about how the investigation unfolded. “When we knew about it, they had him,” Self said, making clear that the federal process had already moved fast by the time he learned what was happening.

He also noted how tightly guarded these cases can be. “The FBI, through the Capitol Police, only tells us so much,” he told CBS, although he did note, “I understand that they’ve known about this kid for a while.”

According to WFAA, the teen allegedly had plans to go after Self at a specific event, which adds another unnerving layer to the story. Federal investigators also believe the suspect was preparing a separate attack in the name of ISIS, suggesting the threat was not just personal or political, but part of a larger violent fantasy.

Asked whether his stance on Islamic extremism could have made him a target, Self was careful not to overstate what he knows. “If it’s ISIS related, you kind of have to believe that. I can’t prove that. I don’t know that for sure,” he said.

Still, the congressman’s recent work shows why he is seen as a sharp critic of radical Islam. Last month, he introduced a nonbinding congressional resolution denouncing Sharia law and opposing its implementation in the United States.

He also teamed up with Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, to launch the “Sharia-Free America Caucus” last year, a group aimed at pushing back against the influence of Sharia law. That effort has made Self more visible in the national conversation around extremism, immigration, and religious liberty.

The timing is notable, too, since Self is seeking a third term in Congress in November’s midterm elections. In a climate where threats against lawmakers can escalate quickly, the line between political friction and outright danger keeps getting thinner.

Law enforcement has not publicly released the teen’s name, and the full picture behind the alleged plot is still developing. The arrest, though, is already another reminder that extremist threats can surface in plain sight and move faster than most people expect.
