Super Mario Galaxy Movie Champions Family Values, Civic Duty

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie picks up after the 2023 film, sending Mario and Luigi on a bright, fast-paced space caper loaded with familiar faces, new allies, and enough Nintendo fan service to please longtime players and curious kids alike.

Our favorite mustached plumbers are back doing what they do best: plumbing and heroics, with Mario and Luigi voiced by Chris Pratt and Charlie Day. Princess Peach remains steady under Anya Taylor-Joy’s performance, and Jack Black returns as Bowser, reduced to a pocket-sized captive tucked away inside Peach’s castle. The setup feels playful and sets the stage for a larger cosmic conflict.

Bowser Jr., played by Benny Safdie, emerges as the real troublemaker this time, plotting to abduct Princess Rosalina, voiced by Brie Larson. Rosalina is introduced as the powerful watcher of the cosmos, a character gamers first met in the 2007 Super Mario Galaxy game. Bowser Jr.’s plan is to harness her powers to fuel a super weapon that could tear the galaxy apart and to break his father out of captivity.

‘PROJECT HAIL MARY’ REVIEW: RYAN GOSLING AND AN ALIEN ATTEMPT TO SAVE THE PLANET IN FUN SPACE ADVENTURE

The film stacks its roster with fan favorites and fresh faces, bringing back Toad with Keegan Michael-Key’s familiar vocal charm and introducing a mischievous Yoshi voiced by Donald Glover. These characters add warmth and comic beats, giving Mario and Luigi room to bounce off allies and foes alike. The ensemble helps the story move briskly without feeling overcrowded.

For a franchise that spans four decades, the movie wears its Nintendo heritage proudly and often, packing in references and moments that longtime players will spot. Directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, along with returning screenwriter Matthew Fogel, clearly respect the source material and squeeze a surprising amount of content into about 100 minutes. That affection for the games keeps the movie feeling authentic rather than just derivative.

There is still a ton of untapped material across the Mario universe, and this film hints at bigger possibilities if Universal and Illumination choose to expand carefully. The movie suggests a genuine chance to build a broader Nintendo cinematic universe, with many characters and set pieces left available for future installments. Handled well, there’s plenty of room to grow.

‘HOPPERS’ REVIEW: JON HAMM, MERYL STREEP ELEVATE PIXAR’S RUN-OF-THE-MILL BEAVER ADVENTURE

Comedically the film lands often, with Jack Black getting some of the best lines as Bowser, trying to convince Mario that he’s turned over a new leaf and begging to be let out for “awesome behavior.” Donald Glover’s Yoshi supplies a contagious energy that’s hard not to grin at, and supporting bits land with timing that feels cinematic rather than video game cutscene. The humor hits both kid-friendly and slyly nostalgic notes.

The animation is vivid and immersive, a proper translation of the colorful Mario worlds into motion. Composer Brian Tyler weaves in iconic themes from the games, giving scenes an emotional lift while staying true to what fans expect. Those design and music choices combine to make the movie feel like a celebratory, loud, and lush ride through familiar stages.

‘THE AI DOC’ REVIEW: A TIMELY CRASH COURSE ON THE TECH DOMINATING OUR LIVES

Super fans should stick around for the end credits: there are two post-credit scenes, one that lands as a laugh-out-loud callback and another that clearly teases a third chapter. Fans who love Easter eggs will find plenty to unpack, and the stingers do their job of nudging the franchise forward without overstaying. The film nods to the future while keeping its feet planted in fun.

As a longtime admirer of Mario, this movie left a smile on my face for much of its runtime, hitting the sweet spot between nostalgia and new energy. It doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel, but it does what it sets out to do with verve and affection, entertaining kids and tapping a warm chord for parents who grew up with the games. There’s momentum here, and if the studio follows through, moviegoers have more adventures to look forward to.
