Senate investigators have now gotten hold of Dr. Anthony Fauci’s pandemic-era iPhone, adding a fresh twist to an already heated Washington fight. The handset was transferred from the Department of Health and Human Services to the Senate Homeland Security Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, giving lawmakers another piece of material to examine as the pressure builds.
The move lands right as the panel prepares to decide whether Fauci should be held in contempt of Congress. That alone would be enough to grab attention, but the timing makes it sharper, since Republicans on the committee are already treating the case as a test of whether the former top pandemic official can keep dodging answers.
According to a spokesperson for Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., the subcommittee “obtained a copy of Dr. Fauci’s iPhone that was used during his time at HHS.” Whether the panel can actually access everything on it is still unclear, which leaves a big question mark hanging over what investigators may be able to pull from the device.
The phone transfer follows another large document handoff from HHS, which recently turned over more than 1,000 pages of Fauci’s personal diary to the panel. That kind of flood of material suggests lawmakers are digging deep into the record, trying to reconstruct how decisions were made during the chaos of the COVID years.
The backdrop for all of this is the contentious hearing that put Fauci directly in the hot seat. The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee is set to vote on Thursday morning, and the entire confrontation traces back to questions about funding for risky gain-of-function research tied to Wuhan, China.
Rand Paul, who chairs the panel, subpoenaed Fauci and pushed hard on the issue. The Kentucky Republican has accused Fauci of misleading Congress and wants real consequences, not more polished talking points and legal shields.
Fauci did not give the kind of answers critics were hoping for. On advice from his lawyers, he repeatedly invoked his Fifth Amendment rights, saying, “Although it pains me to do so because of the respect I have for the legislative branch of government and my decades-long record of cooperating with Congress under the advice of my attorneys, I will invoke my right under the Fifth Amendment of the Constitution to refrain from answering your questions,” Fauci said.
That decision lit the fuse even faster. Republican lawmakers pressed him on everything from the origins of the virus to his role in shaping the government response, while Democrats argued that refusing to answer was the smart move in a setting they believed was built to trap him.
Paul was not in a forgiving mood. He has made clear that Fauci should face punishment for his testimony and has also questioned whether Biden’s pardon is enough to shield him from further legal exposure.
“I think there’s another legal question that the courts may have to decide upon, and that is whether or not a presidential pardon offers you complete immunity,” Paul said at the time.
The atmosphere around the hearing only got more intense as Republicans kept circling back to Fauci’s answers, or lack of them, and the legal consequences that could follow. The new cellphone handoff gives the fight a more personal edge, since lawmakers now have a device tied to Fauci’s own work inside the federal health bureaucracy.
What happens next depends on the committee vote and how much value investigators believe the phone and diary can actually add. For now, the dispute has moved beyond a single hearing and into a broader battle over records, accountability, and whether one of the most famous public health figures in America will keep facing the Senate’s toughest questions.
