Knife crime remains a significant issue in the United Kingdom, with nearly half of all murders involving sharp weapons over the past three years. Despite strict gun control laws, the streets of Britain continue to suffer from violence, especially knife-related offenses.
Data from 38 police forces, obtained by the Metro newspaper through Freedom of Information Requests, revealed that 49 percent of murders were committed with knives or sharp objects.
Between 2022 and 2024, out of 898 recorded murders, 443 resulted from stabbings. London, under the leadership of far-left Mayor Sadiq Khan, has seen rising levels of knife crime, leading the country with 65 percent of murders involving blades. The largest group of knife crime victims in London were aged 18 to 24, with 46 young people losing their lives during the period.
Thames Valley Police, covering areas like Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, and Oxfordshire, reported that 14 out of 23 murders, or 60.86 percent, were stabbings between 2022 and 2024.
In the West Midlands, 42 out of 74 murders, equating to 57 percent, involved knives or sharp weapons. The report highlighted that men were more likely to be murder victims, with 644 males and 245 females killed during this time.
The report, however, did not provide details on the racial or immigration status of either victims or perpetrators. There is growing criticism of police forces for not recording the ethnicity of offenders, especially in light of past controversies like the child rape grooming gang scandal.
Ministry of Justice data showed that police failed to record the ethnicity of one in three rapists, murderers, and those convicted of serious assaults last year.
This failure to record ethnicity rose from 11.8 percent in 2010 to 34.4 percent recently. Conservative government minister Neil O’Brien has called for the publication of complete statistics on the criminality of different ethnic groups and their immigration status.
Rather than addressing these concerns, the government has focused on banning certain types of knives and increasing restrictions on selling or advertising blades online.
The Southport mass stabbing, committed by a second-generation migrant from Rwanda, highlighted the issue of knife availability. The attacker, dubbed the ‘Amazon Killer’ by legacy media, purchased the weapon used in the crime from an e-commerce website. Such incidents have prompted the government to tighten regulations on knife sales.
Police forces are urged to improve their data recording practices to provide a clearer picture of crime demographics. This information is vital for developing effective policies to combat knife crime and improve public safety.
