Pilots don’t always win by flying faster or hitting harder. Sometimes the smartest move is to make the enemy chase ghosts, and that is exactly where the MALD decoy system comes in. Updated hardware and software have given this long-running program fresh bite, letting it create fake fighter-jet signatures that can pull radar attention away from real aircraft.
The basic idea is simple, but the effect is nasty for anyone staring at a radar screen. A MALD is launched into hostile airspace, where it behaves enough like a real threat to make air defenses react. While those systems light up and start sorting through the false picture, the actual mission can keep moving with a much better chance of staying hidden.
Raytheon’s MALD, short for Miniature Air-Launched Decoy, has been around in one form or another for decades. It traces back to a DARPA-backed effort in the 1990s, then moved through different versions as the program changed hands and matured. The current family includes the standard MALD and the MALD-J jammer variant, which gives the concept even more muscle.
These are not giant, flashy aircraft. They are compact weapons that ride on an aircraft’s hardpoints much like other munitions, yet they can travel roughly 575 miles and push deep into enemy territory. That reach matters because it lets them go far enough to disturb defenses where the pressure really counts, not just at the edge of the fight.
The MALD-J adds another layer of trouble for air defenses. It can work alone or alongside another decoy, get close to radar systems, and then jam electronics while hanging around to keep the enemy busy. That mix of deception and electronic attack is what makes it such a headache for anyone trying to build a clean picture of the sky.
Size-wise, the system is surprisingly modest for something so disruptive. The vehicles are about 9 feet, 4 inches long, with a wingspan of 5 feet, 7 inches, and they weigh just 99.2 pounds. They can fly at up to Mach 0.91, around 698 mph, powered by a Hamilton Sundstrand TJ-150 turbojet, and they can stay airborne for about 90 minutes.
What makes MALD so effective is not brute force, but imitation. Its payload is built to manipulate radar frequencies, which means it can spoof the signatures of different aircraft and send operators down the wrong path. A radar screen might suggest an F-15, an F-35, or some other threat depending on how the decoy has been programmed, and that false picture can reshape how an entire air defense network responds.
That kind of confusion can be a lifesaver in combat. If defenders think attacks are coming from one direction, or from several directions at once, they can waste precious time, missiles, and attention on the wrong target. And if the alternative is risking a real aircraft and the people inside it, sacrificing a decoy becomes an easy call.
The system’s battlefield value has already been proven in Ukraine, where it has been used against Russian radar networks. That experience has pushed MALD back into the spotlight, and production has been restarted to get more units into the field. In a war where every signature matters and every radar blink can give away a position, a fake jet can sometimes do the work of a very real one.
