America’s obesity issue is a growing concern, with almost 42% of adults being classified as obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The reasons behind this health crisis could be numerous, ranging from limited access to nutritious foods and proper education to the widespread availability of fast food. As a result, obesity-related healthcare costs have skyrocketed to $190.2 billion, as recently highlighted by the National League of Cities. A new study from WalletHub took a closer look at 100 major metropolitan areas, comparing them across 19 key indicators to identify the most overweight and obese cities by 2025.

McAllen, Texas, leads the list as the most overweight city in America. It ranks third in both obesity and overweight metrics, as well as in food and fitness assessments. The city also ranked fifth in terms of health consequences. McAllen has a notably high percentage of overweight adults, with 31% falling into that category, though not officially obese.

Little Rock, Arkansas, comes in as the second-most overweight city. It ranks fourth in health consequences and fifth in obesity and overweight. The city also holds the seventh position for food and fitness. Alarmingly, Little Rock has a significant rate of childhood obesity, with nearly 23% of children aged 10 to 17 being affected. The city also faces challenges with adult health conditions, including high blood pressure and heart disease.

Jackson, Mississippi, is third on the list, but it tops the chart in obesity and overweight measurements. The city struggles with a high percentage of physically inactive adults, which WalletHub identifies as a major contributor to its obesity problem. Additionally, Jackson has high rates of obesity among kids and teenagers, along with notable health concerns like stroke and high blood pressure.

The CDC defines obesity as having a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, and severe obesity as a BMI of 40 or more. In these top-ranking cities, limited access to healthy foods and recreational opportunities is a significant issue. WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo points out that investment in these areas could help improve community health and reduce financial burdens.

Cristina Palacios, PhD, a professor at Florida International University, emphasizes the importance of a healthy diet in managing weight. She suggests making small, manageable changes to one’s diet rather than overhauling it all at once. For instance, she recommends replacing sugary drinks with water as a first step, which can significantly impact calorie intake.

In McAllen, the city’s health issues are compounded by a high percentage of residents with diabetes and heart disease. The situation is similarly concerning in Little Rock, where the lack of health educators and access to nutritious food options remains a critical problem. Jackson’s residents face challenges in accessing healthy foods, which further exacerbates the city’s weight-related issues.

These findings underscore the urgent need for public health interventions and community-based solutions to address the growing obesity epidemic. By focusing on improving access to healthy foods and creating more opportunities for physical activity, these cities could make strides in enhancing the well-being of their residents. The financial and health implications of ignoring this issue are too significant to overlook.
