Mitt Romney’s sister-in-law, Carrie Elizabeth Romney, was found dead near a Los Angeles-area parking garage in Valencia, California, on Friday evening.

Romney said, “Our family is heartbroken by the loss of Carrie, who brought warmth and love to all our lives. We ask for privacy during this difficult time.”

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said the matter is under active investigation and that the county Department of Medical Examiner will determine the official cause of death.

Medical examiner records listed the cause as deferred while authorities continue their work, and the body’s status was recorded as ready for release pending those findings.

A department representative said investigators believe the woman either jumped or fell from a nearby parking structure, placing the incident at a five-story garage adjacent to a Hyatt Regency hotel.

“Foul play has not been ruled out, but as of right now, there is no evidence of it,” Los Angeles County Sheriff’s spokesperson Lt. Daniel Vizcarra said.

Carrie Romney was 64 and was the third wife of Mitt Romney’s older brother, George “Scott” Romney, who is 81 and a longtime attorney with family ties to national Republican politics.

Scott Romney is also the father of Ronna McDaniel from his first marriage, and court documents show he and Carrie married in November 2016 and had no children together.

According to divorce filings, Scott Romney submitted for dissolution of the marriage on June 10 citing irreconcilable differences, and he noted that most assets were acquired separately prior to their union.

Those same filings say Carrie had sought spousal support, which Scott opposed, and he requested that she revert to her maiden name, Carrie Elizabeth Dimas.
